[Indie Pick] Savina & Drones

We’re back with a new Indie Pick, this time all about soloist Savina & Drones. If you enjoy rich vocals and a more acoustic approach, keep on reading!

Debut

Savina & Drones (Choi Min-young) is a Korean singer-songwriter who debuted in 2010 with the EP ‘Does To Live’. Her first EP contains 1960’s soul, folk, jazz and 70’s grunge rock according to the album description. It’s a wonderfully smooth listen.

Her name comes from Savina which is her christening name. The word drone stands for the sound that resonates from the vibration of a single string in the Indian instrument sitar. It means that the sound resonates and resonates in the listener’s heart.

Savina & Drones’ first full-length album ‘Gayo’ came out in 2011. It’s a combination of new tracks and her first EP. The opening of the title track ‘Where Are You’ still gives me chills when I listen to it.

After a five year hiatus, she came back with her second full-length album ‘Our Time Lies Within’. Her song ‘Don’t Break Your Heart’ was actually the first song I discovered by her. The whale-like sound of the instrumentals and her rich vocals make this such a unique listening experience.

OSTs

Because of her emotive vocals, Savina & Drones’ vocals are superbly suited for OSTs. At the moment she has six OSTs released.

There’s ‘My Home’ for the K-drama ‘Mr. Sunshine’.

For the drama ‘Just Between Lovers’ she had the song ‘Aurora’.

However, ‘Glass Bridge’ for the drama ‘The Bride of Habaek’ which was released in 2017, is still her most popular OST.

In 2020 Savina & Drones released the trilogy ‘A Year Long’

The first single of the trilogy is ‘Prelude’. It’s released in both Korean and English. Honestly, the music video has major watercolor painting vibes. In the album description she wrote that she hopes this song can be a lullaby for you to fall asleep to.

‘Where All Loves End’ is the second part. The track was written and composed by Savina & Drones and it was arranged by Glowingdog

Finally, the last chapter in the trilogy is ‘ChrisBlue’sMas’ which is a jazzy Christmas carol.

Despite not having a gigantic discography, Savina & Drones has managed to leave a solid impact on the K-Indie industry. Her music is timeless. It will always make you feel your emotions. Lastly, I enjoy her first album just as much as I did a couple of years ago.
