[Review] Weeekly – We Play

The girls from Weeekly are back with their new mini-album ‘We Play’. I am 100% ready for some new bops, so let’s dive straight in.

We Play

We start off with the track ‘Yummy!’. This track feels super groovy with its bouncy bass and brass samples. What a great opening to the mini-album. It’s a hella catchy track that is a shot of serotonin.

‘Lucky’ follows that with Soojin’s vocals opening. There are so many different things happening to this track at once. I had to relisten to it a couple of times just to figure out what was going on. I’m still not sure I get it, but regardless of that, this is a total bop. I thought it’d be more mid-tempo because of the opening, but nope. Ji Yoon wrote the lyrics and helped compose the track.

Next up is the title track ‘After School’ that came accompanied with a brand new music video. Honestly skater girls for the win. The references to their previous title tracks are cute and well integrated in the song. I am in LOVE with that small second of harmonizations. Legit, give me a whole song like that.

We follow that up with ‘Uni’. I don’t think I can unhear ‘It’s like a dumptruck’ but apart from that it is a BOP. It’s a bit softer that ‘After School’ but still has this cheerful energy that I’ve come to associate with Weeekly.

‘Butterfly’ is the last track on the mini-album. JeA from Brown Eyed Girls helped compose this track, which honestly is iconic. This pop-ballad gives them the space to show off their vocal power.
