Actor Spotlight: Koo Kyo-Hwan

We’re back with a new Actor Spotlight, this time about Koo Kyo-Hwan. If you like great performances with interesting characters, keep on reading.

The Beginning

Koo Kyo-Hwan is a Korean actor and director who had his first breakthrough role in the indie film ‘Jane’. Before that he had roles in ‘Castaway on the Moon’ (2009), ‘A Werewolf Boy’ (2012), ‘Romance in Seoul’ (2014), ‘Now Playing’ (2015) and ‘Beaten Black and Blue’ (2016). The latter earned him Actor of the Year during the Busan Film Festival.

The 2016 film ‘Jane’ tells the story of a runaway girl who meets a transgender woman. Koo Kyo-Hwan plays the woman and it earned him critical acclaim and the Best New Actor award at the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards.

He was also in the Korean films ‘Maggie’ and the blockbuster ‘Peninsula’. For ‘Maggie’ Koo Kyo-Hwan is also credited as screenwriter.

He’s also in the upcoming film ‘Escape From Mogadishu’.

Recently he has teamed up with Netflix for the film ‘Kingdom: Ashin of the North’ and the series ‘D.P.’ alongside Jung Hae-In.

Directing

He also directed a bunch of short films between 2011 and 2017. He created short films like ‘Turtles’ (2011), ‘Welcome to My Home’ (2013), ‘Now Playing’ (2015) and ‘Girls on Top’ (2017).

For the short film ‘Now Playing’ he is credited as screenwriter, producer, film editor and script editor as well.

It’s very interesting to see the kind of characters that Koo Kyo-Hwan brings to both the big and the small screen. I’m very intrigued to see what he does next in his career.
