BTS and the Grammys SNAFU

On Wednesday the Grammy nominations were released and despite our hopes, BTS wasn’t on the list of nominees. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the biggest SNAFU of the year.

Across the 84 (84!) categories, not even once does BTS show up. It’s in no way because the Grammy’s don’t know of BTS. They were nominated last year for Best Recording Package. They presented the Best R&B Album as well. They’re even voting members for the Grammys!

Oh yeah, their iconic suits will also be displayed at the L.A. Grammy Museum.

They all feel like token acts right now, to be honest. A way to keep the massive fanbase happy and satiated with quick sugar, despite the fact that we totally deserve a nutritious, wholesome meal that could have been a real Grammy nomination.

The BTS members have been working so hard. They have been breaking records left and right, selling out Stadiums, blessing the world with their message of ‘loving yourself’. There’s also the fact that their music is freaking amazing.

BTS charted three albums on Nr. 1 on Billboard in less than a year. Nobody has managed to do that since The Beatles.

K-pop is valid

It’s a sign that the Grammys clearly don’t see K-pop as valid. Despite the best selling album of 2019, despite the records, despite the huge massive media attention, despite the charts, most of the big categories are all English songs and/or English speaking artists.

Even though with the help of Spotify and iTunes and YouTube, people have been broadening their music tastes and listening to songs from all over the world, in all kinds of languages. The Grammys remain very Eurocentric.

Feel free to check out my previous article about the endless xenophobia that BTS is still experiencing.

ARMYs are notably upset, just check any Twitter hashtag about BTS right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if ARMY manages to chart every single album of BTS just to show their power. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Oh, well. It’s the Grammys loss really. They’re being put in a bad spotlight. The BTS members will do what they’ve always done. They’ll work hard and prove it to them. And ARMY will be there to cheer them on. Somehow it’s a never ending fight.

So go do your part and stream their albums.
