[Review] Eric Nam – The Other Side

Eric Nam, singer-songwriter and host of The Daebak Show is back with a new EP ‘The Other Side’. Let’s dive right in!

The Other Side

We start off the EP with the track ‘Trouble With You’. It’s a funky pop song with some awesome synths going off in the back. I also like the repetitive guitar riff. It’s really fun to listen to and feels very much in line with Eric Nam’s styles.

Next up is the title track ‘PARADISE’ that came accompanied with a brand new music video. I totally dig the intro and I thoroughly enjoy how it was sort of the backbone of the entire song. Eric Nam’s vocals are ageing like fine wine, he keeps getting better and better.

In the album description he writes how in the music video he’s playing different versions of himself. Because while one version might be stuck in their thoughts and they can only see how the grass is greener on the other side, someone else might be envious of where you are now. It’s an interesting concept and the music video portrayed it well. The little French note ‘Vis Ta Vie’ means ‘Live Your Life’.

‘How You Been’ follows that and gives us a breath from the fast paced tracks. We’re going to Sad Town y’all. Nevermind about that breath, because this took mine away. The intensity and desperation is a bit overwhelming but not in a bad way. I would love to see a live version of this, preferably when I’ve had half a bottle of wine. I think that would give me the full experience. Also I really like how the song sort of drifted out, that was very lovely.

The fourth track is ‘Down For You’. The first time I listened to this, I was like HELLO?! This chorus is so funky and unlike anything in Nam’s repertoire. I’m shook, but it’s hella awesome! It’s groovy, catchy and the way they played with the vocals is really cool.

The last track on the EP is the Korean version of the pre-released ‘Love Die Young’. The lyric video is for the English version, but appreciate it while you listen to the new one.

Overall

‘The Other Side’ by Eric Nam is funky, fresh and absolutely lovely. DAY6’s Young K has writing credits on all but one song and I’m loving the team work here.
