Mini-Album Review: SUJU K.R.Y. – When We Were Us

ELFs around the world are being blessed with a comeback of the beloved Super Junior sub-unit K.R.Y.. This sub-unit including Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung, is nothing but vocal talent that is guaranteed to have us crying with their celestial voices and touching performances.

Are you ready? Let’s start digging into this release.

When We Were US

The title track ‘When We Were Us’ starts off this mini album, as expected we get some incredible orchestration and breathtaking, top quality vocals that suit the OST of any drama or movie perfectly. But I’m sure I will have the same feeling with every single track of this release. You can watch the music video below, and be ready to be taken away by the beauty of this trio.

Starting off with Kyuhyun’s incredible vocals and a double bass accompaniment we have ‘Way to Busan’,  the violins throughout this track and the K.R.Y. harmonization is nothing but breathtaking and I’m sure this song will touch many people’s soft spot.

We get a jazzy intro with Ryeowook’s voice in ‘The Way Back to You’. This song’s flow is jazzy, playful and has that R&B vibe that reminded me a lot of the 1950s jazz scene with a touch of modern music that is super refreshing to listen to. The saxophone solo in this song is incredible, and overall this track is a full experience for music lovers.

I Can’t’ begins with Yesung’s voice and a piano accompaniment that will have you grabbing the tissues, because tears might come out. Their voices complement each other’s extremely well in this song, the orchestration and Ryeowook’s high note in the bridge are amazing. This song is just incredible from start to end.

A piano solo introduces ‘Home’ and this ballad feels extremely comforting, the flow and delivery of lyrics are like a warm hug. There is something special about it that will have you quietly listening to it and just enjoying the vocals and instruments.

Closing this mini-album on the soft side we have ‘Midnight Story’, this track will go straight into my Lo-fi kpop playlist. Everything about it screams calmness, peacefulness and it’s just beautiful. I loved the whistling at the end of it, it felt like the addition I did not know I needed to complete this musical experience. Just TOP QUALITY music.
