EP Review: VICTON – nostalgia

VICTON, a seven member idol group has just released their fifth mini album ‘nostalgia’. For this mini album they’re just six, because Seungwoo, the leader of VICTON was selected to be in X1 and won’t be back until 2022.

They may be with one member less, but they still did an amazing job for ‘nostalgia’. Let’s get into the songs.

‘nostalgia’

The first track is the unbelievably soft ‘intro (nostalgia)’. I’m very much reminded of those lo-fi hip hop playlists on YouTube. The piano is what makes it perfect though.

Then we move onto the title track of this mini album; ‘Nostalgic Night’. First of all, the video is incredible, the acting top notch! There’s something quite sad threaded throughout the song. It’s an exercise in restraint so that it feels like an honest expression of emotion rather than just dramatic. Absolutely incredible!

‘New World’ is the third song on ‘nostalgia’. This is a little bit more upbeat. Also it has something of a latin rhythm at times. Can we just give a quick shoutout to Hanse? I loved his rap part in this. I think after ‘Nostalgic Night’ we needed this song to give our heart a break. It’s just a really fun song.

The fourth track is ‘Farewell’. Alright, this kind of feels like a mixed bag of emotions. There’s sadness in there, but it feels more like it’s a temporary goodbye. It sounds kind of hopeful. I especially love the intro and the part when they’re chanting together ‘that’s okay’.

‘Here I am’ is up next. This song was written by two of the members, Seungsik and Hanse. ‘Here I am’ should really be an OST. It’s so sweet, going into ballad territory.

I kind of got emotional whiplash from the transition from ‘Here I am’ to their last track ‘Hands Up’. This is a party song y’all. What a happy note to end this rather sad sounding album, though that totally should’ve been expected from the title.

What an amazing mini-album. I really got hit in my feelings, exactly how I like it. I’d never really heard anything from VICTON before, but I’ll definitely do a deep dive into their discography after this.
