[Indie Pick] Jackingcong

We’re back with a new Indie Pick and this time, we’re featuring the band Jackingcong! This five member band debuted in January 2019, so it felt appropriate to celebrate their two year existence.

The band has been on my radar for a while. They’ve been featured in our Weekly K-Indie Reports and even Part 8 of our favorite Korean Indie/Rock Bands which you can check out here

Jackingcong’s name apparently comes from an onomatopoeia (the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named) and stands for the rhythm they wish to express.

Kang Hoon is the main vocalist and trumpet player. He’s also the one who writes most of the lyrics for the band’s releases. We have Bemo on the guitar, Seowon on the piano, Yoodong on the bass and Sehun on the drums.

Debut

Their single album ‘Moondance’ was the boys’ debut and immediately set the tone for this incredible band. Jackingcong blends jazz and indie so well together. Listen to that trumpet in ‘The End of The Ocean’ and tell me you don’t feel anything.

Their first comeback was with the single ‘Don’t be blue’ and I love the ebb and flow of this song. It’s perfect for a little sway around your bedroom. The trumpet that mimics the vocal arrangement is super cute.

Later in the same year, they released their first ever music video with ‘Weather’.

Take a look at some of the lyrics:

All of a sudden one day, I thought that
I was spending every single day exactly the same
The weight of feelings that came and went
always turned my poor heart to ashes
The barely crumpled thoughts
were just as they had been when I opened my eyes
My day feels like four whole seasons
I linger, swimming
on unsleeping waves
and spend yet another day mindlessly

In 2020 Jackingcong released their first full album ‘Dress Code’. The album has ten songs and one feature by onthedal.

Their latest release is the song ‘Curly Hair’ which I’m absolutely in love with. I’ve been replaying it quite a bit since it was released. Honestly the song is just a vibe.

As a way of closing this feature about Jackingcong, please look at this video of Seowon and Sehun just vibing.
