[Review] Yumi’s Cells

In this week’s K-Drama review we are diving into the mysteries of the mind and emotions with the 2021 tvN production ‘Yumi’s Cells’ based on the webtoon created by Lee Dong-gun.

The human mind

Directed by Lee Sang-yeon and written by Kim Kyung-ran and Kim Yoon-joo, ‘Yumi’s Cell’ talks about Kim Yumi (Kim Go-eun) is a regular office worker, who struggles sometimes to express her feelings, however, she is helpful, efficient and not afraid of taking on new challenges.

Throughout this drama we see Yumi’s world and how her day to day develops through her cells. Each cell in Yumi’s mind represents an emotion and they look after Yumi’s day to day depending on the task. Among these cells we see love, rationality, hunger, emotion, anxiety, and so on.

After being set up on a blind date by a coworker, Yumi meets Goo Woong (Ahn Bo-hyun) a game developer with a terrible sense of humor but a lot of charisma. He is caring and gets immediately smitten by Yumi after he meets her.

With some doubts at the beginning, Yumi decides to start dating Go Woong, and throughout this series we see the development of their relationship and the different emotional changes this pair goes through during it.

Personal Growth

Yumi’s Cells’ gives us a glance at the complexity of human emotions. During this drama we see how her emotions change based on her experiences. We also see her priorities change based on the result of her decisions.

At the same time, throughout the full plot we also get a glimpse of Goo Woong’s cells, and how different their minds are. While Yumi’s mind is made of her cells, he uses only a few cells and it is run by an AI supercomputer.

Given this, Goo Woong’s decisions are mostly based on rationality. They’re either correct or incorrect, but Yumi interprets the moment to make a decision through her cells. Their views change the course of their actions and interactions during this series and also creates conflict.

Despite their differences, this couple tries to make it through and improve to be together, but trying might not be enough.

Yumi’s Cells’ is scheduled to come back with another season, and viewers will have the chance to see how Yumi’s mind develops in her new life and professional challenges.
