In this edition of our weekly review, we are diving into a recent drama that totally captured our hearts with its lovable characters and fan-girling flair. Let’s talk about the tvN production ‘My Bias, My Boss’.
Based on the webtoon My Bias, My Boss by Seoug Eun, written by Lee Young and Kim Ji-an, and directed by Park Ji-hyun, this drama follows a devoted fan-girl who dreams of meeting the idol she has supported for over a decade. But when she unexpectedly ends up working at his company, she finds herself getting much closer to her bias than she ever imagined, and developing feelings for someone else along the way.
From Fan-Girl to Favourite Employee
Nam Da-reum (Kim Hye-jun) has followed and supported the idol group D.N.X since she was 17. Even after the group disbanded, she continued supporting her bias, Chan. She credits her fangirl activities with helping shape her personal growth, friendships and even some of her life goals, so naturally, her biggest dream is to one day meet her idol in person.
Determined to make that dream a reality, Da-reum decides to leave her unfulfilling job and applies to Appello, a fashion brand closely connected to Chan. She is eventually accepted into the company, and when she believes the director she is about to meet is her beloved bias, she becomes understandably nervous on her first day.
However, she soon discovers that Chan is not an active director at the company.
Instead, she meets Kang Ha-gi (Kang Hoon), the CEO of Appello, who built the company alongside Chan from the ground up. At first glance, Ha-gi appears cold and distant, but his personality completely changes when he is around his close friends and the people he trusts.
When he first meets Da-reum, Ha-gi suspects that she might be a spy from a competing company. But as they work together, he begins to see her strong work ethic, honesty and determination. Before long, his initial suspicions start turning into something completely different — he inevitably begins falling for her.
The Bias
Lee Chan (Cha Woo-min) is a former member of the idol group D.N.X and an actor. Despite being showered with affection throughout his career, Chan still struggles to understand the concept of love, which has resulted in a series of short-lived relationships.
When he meets Da-reum and discovers that she has been his fan for more than ten years, he is genuinely touched by her dedication. His gratitude slowly develops into affection, and because these feelings are unfamiliar to him, Chan becomes determined to understand what exactly he is feeling.
He starts spending more time with Da-reum, hoping to discover whether what he feels for her could actually be love.
Exploring Emotions
As Da-reum’s work becomes a major asset to Appello, she finds herself working increasingly closely with Ha-gi. Through their different projects and everyday interactions, she begins discovering the person behind his seemingly cold exterior.
At the same time, Da-reum starts noticing something important: the affection she feels for Ha-gi is completely different from the feelings she has for Chan.
Her relationship with Chan is deeply connected to the admiration and affection she has carried for her idol for more than a decade. But what she feels for Ha-gi grows naturally from getting to know him as a person. Slowly, she begins to understand the depth of those feelings.
Just as she starts considering how to express them, however, a massive dating scandal involving Chan breaks out, putting her relationship with Ha-gi and her position at Appello at risk.
Despite his own conflicting feelings and jealousy, Ha-gi remains determined to help Da-reum. He works to clear her name and make sure she can return to work, showing her just how much he cares about her.
Through his actions, Da-reum finally understands the depth of her own feelings for Ha-gi, and how different they are from the affection she has always had for Chan as his dedicated fan.
A Candid Workplace Romance
‘My Bias, My Boss’ is one of those easy-to-watch productions that is simply a lot of fun. The characters are awkward, adorable and incredibly lovable, and we enjoyed watching them grow throughout the drama.
The chemistry between Kang Hoon and Kim Hye-jun was soft, candid and organic. They made for a very cute pair of leads, and we particularly loved how both characters felt unique while still complementing each other.
This was also the first time we watched Cha Woo-min play such a soft character, and he delivered a charming performance. He made Chan incredibly endearing, and, unsurprisingly, we also found ourselves falling for his fictional idol persona alongside Da-reum!
What we particularly enjoyed about the drama was the way it explored the difference between being a fan of someone and actually falling in love with them. Da-reum has spent years admiring Chan, but working alongside Ha-gi allows her to discover what it means to develop feelings for someone she knows beyond the image she has created in her mind.
