[Review] Miss Granny

We’re back with a new film review, this time about the  2014 film ‘Miss Granny’.

‘Miss Granny’ is one of the most adapted films. It currently has nine versions in different languages like Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish.

Plot

The story revolves around Oh Mal-Soon, who is 74 and overhears a conversation of her son and grandchildren where they discuss putting her in a nursing home. The wife and mother collapsed and her doctor advised her to rest. Since Oh Mal-Soon is quite harsh on her daughter-in-law, the family was considering moving her.

Oh Mal-Soon is devastated and stumbles upon a photo studio. However, this is quite the magical photo studio. The photographer told her he would make her look like she was twenty again. However, that translated into real life, not just for her photograph.

Oh Mal-Soon steps out looking like a twenty-year-old, whilst still having the mannerisms of a granny. It’s hilarious to watch her interactions. The thing is that, now that she looks and feels young again, she feels like she’s been given a second chance to chase life.

Her life had been very hard. She was a single mother, after her husband passed away while working in the mines. She was extremely poor and struggling to make ends meet. However, she worked hard and made it. Her son is a professor at university and they’re living comfortably.

She starts singing in her grandson’s band and the band even makes it on television. It’s a constant balance between staying close enough to her family to know they’re fine and not being close enough they recognise who she is.

Overall

‘Miss Granny’ is such a heartwarming film. It’s funny, has a lovely message and super solid acting performances. Na Moon-Hee (‘Navillera’) plays the old Oh Mal-Soon while Shim Eun-Kyung portrays the younger version. They both do an incredible job. Shim Eun-Kyung also actually sings the OST ‘White Butterfly’ which is absolutely beautiful.

The film is currently on Netflix and I thoroughly recommend it if you need a heartwarming story, with lots of comedy and fantastic music.
