[Review] Welcome to Samdal-ri

In this week’s K-Drama review, we delve into the heartwarming series that effortlessly blends laughter, tears, and nostalgia – ‘Welcome to Samdal-ri‘. written by Kwon Hye-joo and skillfully directed by Cha Young-hoon, this drama takes viewers on a journey through the quaint community of Samdal-ri in Jeju Island, exploring the enduring bonds of friendship, love, and family.

A Tale of Childhood Friends 

At the heart of ‘Welcome to Samdal-ri‘ are Cho Sam-dal / Cho Eun-hye (Shin Hye-sun) and Cho Yong-pil (Ji Chang-wook), childhood friends whose lives are forever intertwined by tragedy and shared memories. The untimely loss of Yong-pil’s mother, a haenyeo, marks a pivotal moment in their lives, altering the course of their friendship and shaping their destinies. Despite the passage of time and the challenges they face, their bond remains unbreakable.

This tragedy changes the life of many Samdal-ri people, and affects the relationship between Sam-dal’s and Yong-pil’s families. As young adults they both move to Seoul together, searching to achieve their dreams, and leading to these two friends start dating. However, a heartbreaking breakup drives a wedge between them, leading Sam-dal to distance herself from her hometown and cutting ties with all her friends in her hometown.

Homecoming and Healing

Eight years after having broken up with Yong-pil, Sam-dal, known as Eun-hye in her work, is thriving, and has become one of the most well-known and famous photographers, she suddenly becomes involved in a scandal where she is falsely accused, this controversy extends to her sisters Cho Jin-dal (Shin Dong-mi) and Cho Hae-dal (Kang Mi-na), making them flee Seoul, and go back to Jeju Island, and the hometown Samdal-ri. 

Back in Samdal-ri, Eun-hye grapples with reconciling her present with her past, navigating the complexities of family dynamics and unresolved feelings for Yong-pil. As she reconnects with old friends and acquaintances, she discovers the enduring strength of community and the healing power of forgiveness. Through heartfelt moments and poignant revelations, Eun-hye embarks on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
