[Review] TWICE – Eyes Wide Open

The girls from TWICE are back with their second full album ‘Eyes Wide Open’. We’ve been waiting for this one so let’s dive straight in!

Eyes Wide Open

We open this album with the title track ‘I CAN’T STOP ME’. In this song the instrumentals feel quite sparse, they’re mostly EDM and synth which allows the spotlight to really be on the vocals. The song is super fast paced and the music video really reflects that.

Next up is ‘HELL AND HEAVEN’ which starts with exciting guitars and a little audio snippet from an old movie. This more mature, sensual sound had me 100% grooving to it. The vocals seem a bit choppy, but it fits the vibe so well.

‘UP NO MORE’ follows that and the lyrics were written by Jihyo. This retro-pop with a dash of disco is so, so cool. In the album description they wrote that the song was written with the intention of being a comfort for the ones that can’t sleep.

‘DO WHAT WE LIKE’ is up next, this one was written by Sana. This summer song has an incredible hook and I can already tell this is such an earworm. I can totally see this being played at a club. It’s dope.

We’re on track number five with ‘BRING IT BACK’. Dahyun has the writing credits for this track. This chorus and the drop are EVERYTHING. I was legit shook for a second because I didn’t see that coming. I kind of wish the instrumentals in the verses had a bit more spunk.

‘BELIEVER’ is next and brings us some of that smooth R&B sound we all love. Only a bit though, because we slide right back into the retro pop-synth sound. It’s such a lovely combination. The echoey sounds in the chorus are so funky, I love it.

Next up!

Dahyun wrote a second track in this album. ‘QUEEN’ has some really dope brass instruments in the back. This is the anthem for all the queens out there. If you have a friend who’s feeling down, send them this song and they’ll be right back on their feet. The song is super fun and there’s some really interesting dissonance in the chorus. I dig it 100%. Dayun, thank you for this bop!

Next up is ‘GO HARD’. As the title promises, this song goes hard. The instrumentals are insane. I’m not sure which instrument that is in the back, but WOW. Party anthem!

Track number nine is ‘SHOT CLOCK’. This marching band vibe is really fun and I’d love to see a music video where the girls are cheerleaders. The rap verse brings an amazing breath to the song.

‘HANDLE IT’ was written by Chaeyoung and produced by MNEK who was responsible for ‘MORE&MORE’. We get some groovy guitar and some really soft vocals. I love this one a lot. The little outro is hella soft and I’m here for it.

After that we slide into ‘DEPEND ON YOU’, written by Nayeon. This sounds very American but I do appreciate the entire vibe and the message of comfort behind the single.

‘SAY SOMETHING’ gives us those sweet city pop vibes. This entire song feels very dreamy and spacious. This is lovely!

The last song on the album is ‘BEHIND THE MASK’. The song was written by HEIZE and Dua Lipa participated in the composition. This feels a bit darker than the rest of the album, but I am loving the way they decided to close the album with this track. The vocals are out of this world and the song creates the perfect set-up to replay the entire album.
