[Review] Our Beloved Summer

We’re back with a new K-drama Review, this time writing about the much loved ‘Our Beloved Summer’.

The series was produced by Studio N which is a subsidiary of Naver WebToon. ‘Our Beloved Summer’ wasn’t based on a WebToon, however a WebToon is in the works of the main leads’ school days. The drama was written by Lee Na-Eun and directed by Kim Yoon-Jin.

Plot

‘Our Beloved Summer’ is a K-drama that is a coming-of-age story about Choi Ung and Kook Yeon-Su.

Choi Ung played by the brilliant Choi Woo-Sik who you’ll know from the Oscar winning ‘Parasite’. Choi Ung is a student in high school who has one of the lowest ranks. He hasn’t really found his passion yet and has quite the laidback personality.

The opposite of the spectrum is classmate Kook Yeon-Su who has the highest rank and works hard and knows exactly what she wants. Kim Da-Mi does an excellent job portraying the role.

It’s not the first time that Choi Woo-Sik and Kim Da-Mi have played opposite each other. They were also in the film ‘The Witch: Subversion’ together. If you need more of their chemistry, definitely go check that out. Though this one is without romance.

The two are asked to be in a documentary about high school life and get to know each other better. They even start dating.

Then there’s a time skip and we get to know the characters again as adults. The documentary is blowing up online and they are asked to be in a new documentary. The two leads have a lot of loose ends and feelings as prior to the new doc, they had broken up five years ago.

Overall

Even though I’m not really a romance K-drama kind of person, I really enjoyed this drama. It’s cute and wholesome and we see the characters learn how they have to communicate. Some side plots I don’t think were completely necessary and Kim Sung-Cheol’s character, Kim Ji-Ung really doesn’t seem to be having any luck.

Park Jin-Joo is, as often, a solid best friend and I loved her character. Her friendship with Kook Yeon-Su is wholesome and we love seeing supportive besties.

The same goes for Ahn Dong-Goo, he’s a great bestie and manager and he’s a very cute character.

I think everyone did a really great job in this drama. I like how the direction and plot felt a little like a WebToon. The OST was brilliant. And the titles of each episode referred to another romcom.
