[Review] Wonpil – Pilmography

Our boy Wonpil from the popular rock band DAY6 released his first solo album ‘Pilmography’. We are beyond stoked for this release and are ready to dive in, to hear some gutwrenching music.

Pilmography

We start off with the title track ‘Voiceless‘. This is a beautiful ballad that has a lovely blend of waltz and blues. I liked the subtle string instruments and how much the music lent itself to the visual storytelling. I love a good mermaid story. The lyrics hurt, so go read them here for the full experience.

‘Sincerity’ follows that. I really enjoyed the piano opening which then transformed into something else entirely with the addition of the synths and snares. What a super interesting mix. The way it flits back and forth between the two different instrumentals is dope.

Next up is ‘A writer in a love story’. I love this track. It’s very jazzy with the instrumentals and Wonpil’s vocals seem more R&B and blues inspired. It’s a grand listening experience and makes me wanna dance.

‘Walk With Me’ brings the indie folk to the album. The acoustic guitar and the twangy electric guitar really do wonders to the full ambience. This feels very wholesome. I love it. Go for a walk with someone you love and enjoy this track. Also read the lyrics because they’re heartwarming.

Next up

‘Stranded’ brings back some tempo. This feels a bit eighties because of the synths and the background vocals. I genuinely enjoyed this and I hope they do a live video with a full swing band. That’d be super dope.

The next track was co-created with The BLANK Shop. If you don’t know him, check out my review for his album ‘TAILOR‘ because that album is brilliant. On that album Wonpil was featured on ‘Love Song’. For this album, they worked on ‘Someday, Spring will come’. This is such a nice track with a lot of interesting instrumentals like the flute and horns. The mixing in this is delectable.

‘Pieces’ has such a cool bass guitar. The lyrics are rather heartbreaking so go read them. Wonpil brought out his lower register in the beginning and it really made it even more impactful.

After that we get ‘Last Goodbye’. We get soft vocals and a beautiful piano line. It makes for a great emotive ballad that is more stripped down than the other tracks we’ve heard so far but is by no means less impactful.

‘When You Draw’ is a bit more rock inspired. The rock ballad has a super sweet electric guitar playing in the back and it feels like it could be a DAY6 track. It makes me feel a bit melancholic.

The last track is ‘A journey’. This is such an uplifting track that will give you hope for the future. Every day is a new journey and a new beginning, while daunting is a challenge to take on. Check out the lyrics here. The synth drives the song forward like crazy, it’s a full experience.

Overall

I’m very impressed by ‘Pilmography’ by Wonpil. He did a fantastic job and used a lot of great artists to work with in regards to the instruments. Young K is also listed as co-lyricist in a couple of tracks which we love to see.

He created a full listening experience with elegant tracks and excellent lyricism. I just know that fans will adore this release for a very long time.

Go ahead and listen to it on Spotify here.
