K-Music Time Capsule: Insooni – A Goose’s Dream

Today we’ll be listening to an absolute anthem of a song – ‘A Goose’s Dream’ by the one and only Insooni. Chills guys, chills. Hearing the first few chords of this song literally gets me straight in the feels.

But first things first – Insooni is not just any idol, she’s South Korea’s own R&B diva.

She debuted all the way back in 1978, as part of the Abba-esque disco girl group ‘Hee Sisters’. They weren’t immensely popular, as at the time, people didn’t think a girl group could be successful (*laughs in hindsight*). She went solo in 1980.

Insooni is half Korean and half African American. As you can imagine, she faced a lot of prejudice and discrimination growing up. Getting where she is now, was probably a much tougher path than most. Sidenote: For most of her early career, she either covered her natural hair or styled it in more ‘Korean’ fashions. It’s just that extra bit glorious to see her proudly sporting her current hairstyle, when you consider the context.

This song, ‘A Goose’s Dream’, is about having a dream so precious that it gives you the strength to rise above any hardship, to chase it despite any challenge, to ‘stand in front of the cold wall called fate and face it bravely’. Yes, it’s intense. I did use the word anthem, and I use that word sparingly. The video starts with people talking about their own dreams, and as soon as you hear her belt out the refrain you just know this song is timeless.

But enough said, let the music speak for itself:

You can follow her on Twitter as well.
