[Time Capsule] Deulgukhwa – It’s only my world

The band

If you’re into K-rock, or you’ve watched ‘Reply 1988’, you’re probably familiar with the legendary Korean band Deulgukhwa (Wild Chrysanthemum). Dubbed “the Beatles of Korea”, the band released their first album “March” in 1985. Their unique vocals and rebellious lyrics resonated with Korean youth who were suffering under the authoritative regime of the 80s. Some of their songs were actually banned from distribution, because of the nature of their lyrics.

Although not as widely known outside Korea, the band was hugely significant in Korean music. ‘March’ is widely hailed as one of the best albums in K-music history, and it single-handedly kick-started the golden age of Korean rock music. In 2007, ‘March’ was actually voted as the No.1 Greatest Music Album in Korea.

The song

‘It’s only my world’ was the second track of that legendary album, and it’s one of the most beloved classics in Korea. It’s no accident that it’s been covered by *literally everyone*. From T.O.P. and Lee HaeRi to Psy, and just about every single music show contestant at some point or other. In my humble and totally biased opinion the honorable mention of best cover goes to DBSK’s Kim JaeJoong..

The lyrics speak of following one’s dreams, making your own mistakes as you grow, and have that wonderful poetic quality that’s difficult to translate, as the meaning is thoroughly connected to its ‘Korean-ness’. Thinking of older rock songs in my own language, whose lyrics might not quite hit the same mark if translated, I understand. But you don’t really need to understand the words; The vocals and the music speak directly to your heart.

But I don’t have any regrets-

all the dreams I had as I cried and smiled

It’s only my world…”

Enough introductions though. Enjoy the song, and also check out other masterpieces by Deulgukhwa, like ‘Don’t you worry’ and ‘After the love has gone’ – (I literally started bawling just listening to that).
