[Review] Youngjae – COLORS from Ars

Youngjae is back with his solo debut mini-album ‘COLORS from Ars‘. ‘Ars’ is the name GOT7‘s Youngjae goes by as composer and writer. For this EP he was involved in the full production and we are eager to see this new side of him as a solo artist.

Let’s check out the music!

COLORS from Ars

This mini-album begins with ‘Beautiful‘, a single with a minimalistic sound, and soft, sweet vocals. This song is such an easy listen, it is effortlessly good and there is something about it that is just super chill and peaceful.

Lo-fi and a retro sound join forces in ‘Tasty‘, with a touch of R&B and soft pop this single comes along to show off a more groovy side of Youngjae’s vocals joined by fantastic falsettos. I loved the layering and mixing in this single, it was an unexpected and yet extremely good surprise.

The title track ‘Vibin‘ tags along with a dance pop tempo and a very unique charm delivered in the lyrics. I can see why this single was chosen as title track. It is sweet, catchy and listeners can appreciate the power vocalist Youngjae is.

The music video has a bit of retro feel with its colour palette, and goes well with the road trip concept. Adorable! Watch it below.

Synth and R&B take over in ‘Roses‘, this song is all about sweet singing and emotions. The vocal layering in this single was super good and definitely intensified the feels of the track. Smooth from start to end!

Stunning instrumentation welcomes listeners in ‘Eternal‘ and what a single it is. I really need a live version of this song, it is absolutely breathtaking. All the focus is on the vocals and instrumentals and it is just SO GOOD.

A piano intro and Youngjae’s effortlessly good singing are next in ‘Moonlight‘, this song is by far my favourite one in this release. The musical build up is super good and interesting to listen to. I loved what they did with this single, the little pauses created a momentum before the beat drop and it was sublime.

This mini-album closes on an R&B note with the track ‘Lonely‘, this single is kinda emotional and packed with strong vocalization. It is an unexpected end to this release but I liked the impact it leaves as it ends.

Youngjae showed a completely new side of himself with this release, the singles are very different but worked harmoniously with each other to create a solid mini-album.
