[Review] The Boyz – Unexpected

The boys from The Boyz (pun intended) are back with their third full-length album ‘Unexpected’. I’m sure the fandom is reeling a bit as this release comes on the same day that Sangyeon has to enlist for his mandatory military enlistment. Let’s take a closer look at the album!

Unexpected

We start off with ‘Feel the Bass’ which is a special unit track by Jacob, Juyeon, Kevin, Sunwoo and Eric. This is a hip-hop track with a sick beat and a bunch of talents on the line-up of the writing credits like Colde, Khakii and Haon. The track “contains the confidence to move forward without limits and the thrilling energy that is displayed on stage.”

Next up comes the powerful title track ‘VVV’. This was written and co-composed by SUMIN which is rad for a whole bunch of reasons. ‘VVV’ is a synth pop track with a retro hip-hop infusion. It’s a vibe and a half and I am obsessed with the chorus.

‘Starry Night’ goes for an R&B pop moment with cool synths and an even cooler guitar in the instrumental. It’s a short and sweet track, clocking in under two and a half minutes.

Next up is ‘Ain’t Salty’. This is a Deep Pop track with a cool progession and an insane vocal layering. The instrumentals are big and bombastic in a fantastic movie OST way. This is a very cool track. Also the bridge is beautiful!

‘Rose’ is about a dangerous love that “Just like a rose cuts deeper the closer you get, and the duality of love that seeps in more strongly the more you try to get away.” I really enjoyed the laidback vibe of this track and the rap verses were really well executed. The bubbly synths were lovely.

After that comes ‘Rock and Roll’. We’re going for a groovy R&B track with a lot of sensuality. Honestly I’m gonna obsess over this track. This is a super cool one that is just so nice to listen to. That echoey vocal in the pre-chorus is just so sweet!

‘Nothing’ is a slightly slower track talking about a break-up. “The lyrics honestly and lyrically express the psychology of not being able to shake off the lingering feelings while hurting each other.”

‘Miss Demeanor’ is a disco pop moment with funky instrumentals. The vocal layering is done so well and this is just a really fun track. That chorus is a total earworm.

The closing track is ‘Cross Over’. All of the members helped with the lyrics which is very wholesome. They’re promising their everlasting love. It’s cute.
