[Review] Something In The Rain

In this week’s drama review we are sharing our thoughts on a 2018 drama that made more than one fan fall in love with the leads. Let’s talk about the JTBC production ‘Something in the Rain’.

The Plot

Something in the Rain’ (aka. Pretty noona Who Buys Me Food) is a 2018 romance drama directed by Ahn Pan-seok and written by Kim Eun.

This drama shares the story of Jin-ah (Son Ye-jin) and Joon-hee (Jung Hae-in) and how their relationship evolves after reuniting by coincidence.

Jin-ah works as a franchise supervisor for a coffeehouse, her life is fairly monotonous and she is in a relationship which ends due to infidelity from her boyfriend.

Joon-hee is a video game developer who comes back to South Korea after working abroad for a few years, he meets Jin-ah who is a close friend to his sister one day after work when they discover that both work on the same building.

Joon-hee becomes closer to Jin-ah as they keep meeting at work, he helps her to get through issues that happen at her work place. As they spend more time together they start developing feelings for each other. However they need to hide it as they are aware everyone around them will not support their relationship given their age gap and their family circumstances.

Family and Friends

Something in the Rain’ despite being a romantic drama it also focuses on the importance of friendships, closeness to the family and societal taboos related to the workplace and drinking.

This story doesn’t try to give viewers the portrayal of a perfect love or family relationship, but rather focuses on how they can be imperfect and a work in progress. At the same time, the leads do not represent the perfect relationship but they work towards making it work even though it might be not possible due to their age difference and family circumstances.

From Jin-ah’s side, her story also develops in her workplace where sexism, mistreatment and discrimination are factors that are still in place. Throughout this story we see her working towards trying to break these, and stand up for herself and her female co-workers.

Great acting, interesting story

As expected by the incredible list of actors and actresses this drama has, the acting is unmatched. The character development is fantastic and the story doesn’t slow down but rather keeps getting more interesting to the point that you might heavily dislike some of the characters.

Nevertheless, if you are into more grown-up stories and watching dramas that might not necessarily have a happy ending, watch ‘Something in the Rain’. It will not disappoint. Check the trailer below.
