[Review] Samuel Seo – UNITY II

The ever-amazing Samuel Seo is back with his new album ‘UNITY II’. This is a continuation of his 2018 album ‘UNITY’ which we’re still obsessing over. Let’s dive right in!

UNITY II

We start off with the single ‘One’. The intro is groovy and definitely raised my expectations. The grooviness is continued throughout the song and he’s almost scatting at one point. Ugh, I love this so much.

After that we get ‘Link’. The piano is *chef’s kiss*, it creates a very atmospheric picture and the drum rolls and little bells in the background only enhance that. When the bass came in I had to do a double take, because goodness, that was smooth.

‘Pale Blue’ is track number three and this is an exercise in softness. It feels quite restrained with the really soft piano and Samuel Seo’s stunning vocals.

Next up is ‘Gone’. I really dig how they added the little creaks, it sounds like steps on an old wooden floor. The echo on the vocals are really cool. This song seems quite sad and filled with disappointment. The intensity rises towards the end until it resolves into the quieter beginning, coming full circle.

‘Circle’ follows that and this is one of the two title tracks. The backing vocals create almost a dialogue with Samuel Seo and it’s absolutely lovely. This song is so comforting, definitely turn on the captions for this one.

Track six is ‘Eyes’. I might be a bit obsessed with the piano in this one. Just go for a walk, listen to this song and vibe to it.

After that comes ‘When’. The opening laugh had me surprised and when that stunning acoustic guitar came in, I was already adding it to my Indie playlist. This is excellent.

We close the album with the track ‘Cloud’ and this is also the second title track. Kim Oki is listed as the saxophone player, we’ve written about him before, go check that out. What a lovely opening. I can see why they listed this as a title track as well. It goes down smooth like a glass of red wine.
