For this week’s review we’re doing something special and are reviewing the opera ‘ORFEO ED EURIDICE’ which was performed at Daegu Opera House in 2025.
As usual I was browsing through the interwebs, and stumbled upon the website by OperaVision, which is a European platform to promote opera. I came across the page for the performance of ‘Orfeo ed Euridice’ by Opera Daegu House and I couldn’t resist temptation to watch it. I loved it so much I thought it would be a great chance for an evening of a beautiful performance.
With the popularity of ‘Hadestown’, I think most people are at least a little bit familiar with our two main characters, Orpheus and Eurydice. Here is the brief synopsis the website provides: “Orfeo is so consumed with grief at the death of his beloved Euridice that the gods allow him to lead her back from the underworld – if he will not look at her on the way. But who can resist looking at a loved one?”
We follow Orpheus as he gets a chance by Amore to go through the gates of death to find his lovely Eurydice.
The production of the opera was performed at Daegu Opera House in 2025 as the final stage for the Daegu International Opera Festival. It was conducted by Junghyun James Cho, and directed by Sookjeong Eom.
Our leading ladies, (yes ladies!) are Kim Jungmi as Orpheus, Oh Heejin as Eurydice and Lee Junghyun as Amore.
This was a fantastic production, everything from stage design to the vocal performances were absolutely top notch.
So, if you’re curious and want to have a low barrier intro to an opera performance, this might be the perfect start.
