‘Revelations’, the latest film from director Yeon Sang-ho, known for his work on ‘Train to Busan’ and ‘Hellbound‘, brings his own webtoon to life in a mystery thriller that wrestles with themes of faith, justice, and personal belief. Released on Netflix on March 21, the film stars Ryu Jun-yeol and Shin Hyun-been in a brooding narrative that explores how far people will go when they believe they’re doing the right thing.
The plot centers on a pastor (Ryu Jun-yeol) who believes he’s received a divine mission to punish wrongdoers, and a detective (Shin Hyun-been) investigating a missing persons case while haunted by visions of her deceased sister. It’s an intriguing premise, but the film takes its time—sometimes a little too much.
At two hours long, ‘Revelations’ suffers from a sluggish pace. The story feels disjointed at times, and the character introductions are drawn out. Still, the film has its strengths—particularly in the performances.
Shin Min-jae delivers a compelling and unsettling performance, while Ryu stands out as an as the pastor who’s losing grip on his life. These performances elevate the material and help anchor the story even when the narrative momentum falters.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers with moral complexity and don’t mind a slower pace, ‘Revelations’ is worth a watch. It’s not the most tightly executed thriller out there, but it leaves plenty to think about.
