[Review] My Name

We’re back with a new K-drama Review, this time about the highly anticipated series ‘My Name’.

This drama does have themes of sexual assault and rape, so a trigger warning for those who are uncomfortable with that.

Plot

‘My Name’ is a crime series of 8 episodes that was produced by Netflix. It was directed by Kim Jin-Min who also directed ‘Extracurricular’. The script was written by Kim Ba-Da. It stars the wonderful Han So-Hee who you know from her role in the absolute hit series  ‘Nevertheless’.

She plays a woman; Yoon Ji-Woo, whose life was destroyed after her father was murdered by the police right in front of her. Her father was part of the mafia and she goes to his organization to get help for her vengeance.

Park Hee-Soon portrays the head of said mafia; Choi Mu-Jin. You might know Park from his role in ‘The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion’. Choi Mu-Jin is a very charismatic leader, who becomes a very respected uncle of Ji-Woo.

He sends her to a boxing club to train. She meets Do Gang-Jae, played by the excellent Chang Ryul. They don’t exactly hit it off and he ends up becoming another antagonist to deal with. He did a great job, but his crazy is a bit on the nose, and I’m not talking about his face scar.

Ji-Woo ends up working for the police, as a mole for Choi Mu-Jin which brings all kinds of complications. She’s also looking for the murderer within the force.

Overall

‘My Name’ is a really great K-drama. It’s beautifully shot and really portrays that gritty noir theme very well. In regards to plot, it’s a bit predictable if you’ve watched any Korean gangster films or series before. The whole thing is pretty obvious, but it’s still super fun to watch.
