[Review] Dreamcatcher – Apocalypse: Save us

The girls from Dreamcatcher are back to stun us with their new album ‘Apocalypse: Save us’. We are super stoked that they’re back to bless us with new music so let’s dive right in!

Apocalypse: Save us

We start off with the intro track ‘Intro : Save us’. We go from a theatrical organ moment to a full blown rock session with some killer electric guitars. It’s an ominous beginning and sets the stage nicely for the rest of the album.

Next up is the single ‘Locked inside a door’. This is such a vibe. The laidback jazz instrumentals that meet a more synth style is incredible. The way the instrumentals are layered is incredible. The vocals are cool and are such a nice combo wiht that sweet sweet bass. We get a couple of acapella influences which is awesome!

The title track ‘MAISON‘ plays next. This is so dope! I can’t get over it. There’s a bit of hidden screamo added and that shredded bass is so tastefully done. Dami’s verse is exquisite. The ghostly echo of ‘la maison’ is eery and awesome.

The music video is STUNNING! Honestly the CGI is kind of crazy!

‘Starlight’ is a major synthpop moment. I’m obsessed! This feels like quite a new sound and their voices fit it so well!

After that we get ‘Together’. This time we’re going Deep House for the genre. It’s a major vibe and such an easy listen. The descending phrase chorus is SUPER nice. It’s such a catchy song!

‘Always’ is a ballad and a gift to the fans. We get slow, stunning piano with their majestic voices. It’s lovely and an emotional listen.

The Solos

We get the ‘Skit: Seven Doors’ which brings us straight to anime rock opening. It’s a lovely interlude and refreshes the palette for the next seven solo songs.

The first solo is by JiU. ‘Cherry (real miracle)’ is co-written and co-composed by JiU about her dog Cherry. It’s a lovely funky pop track that has a catchy rhythm with a groovy bass.

Sua is next with her solo track ‘No Dot’. This track goes HARD. This track a blend of trap hip-hop with a dash of rock thrown in. Sua raps in the track and it’s straight up fire. That guitar shredding in the chorus is insane and UGH I’m in love.

A bit of a musical whiplash with the following track ‘Entrancing’. We’re stepping straight into a fairytale with Siyeon’s solo. This is a lovely ballad with such an entrancing instrumental. It feels like the OST to a Joseon K-drama. It’s wonderful.

Handong’s solo takes us back to the chilly winter days with her song ‘Winter’. This R&B ballad has incredibly warm instrumentals. The acoustic guitar creates such a cozy environment. Handong’s vocals are lovely and her outro in Chinese is very wholesome.

Next up

Yoohyeon takes us to an old-timey jazz bar with ‘For’. I am going to be obsessed with this for a while. The vocals feel super warm and velvety. This is such a vibe. I need a music video where she sings into one of those classic microphones in black and white.

We’re going punk rock for Dami’s solo ‘Beauty Full’. I’m getting teenage anthem vibes and I a in love. Start headbanging in your rooms with the song at full blast. Dami pulls off this genre so well. Her deep timbre creates such a cool effect.

Gahyeon closes off the album with her solo track ‘Playground’. This retro pop track has some really fun brass in the backing track. It’s a happy go lucky moment that leaves you with a happy feeling.

Overall

‘Apocalypse : Save us’ is a fantastic album by Dreamcatcher. I’m in love with the fact that all the members co-wrote and co-composed their own solo tracks. It gives the songs extra depth and we love to hear it.
