[Review] DAY6 – The Book of Us: Negentropy

The boys from DAY6 are back with their new EP ‘The Book of Us: Negentropy – Chaos swallowed up in love’. We’re super happy to see all five of the members together again.

I had to Google wat ‘negentropy’ meant because I had no idea. Basically it means that things are becoming more in order, or in structure. It’s the opposite of ‘entropy’ which was the title of their 2019 album.

‘The Book of Us: Negentropy’

We start off with the song ‘everday we fight’. The heavy rock sound in this track takes me back to some of the older DAY6 songs. It makes me rather nostalgic. I love the dissonant tone in the bridge and the surprise synths.

After that we get the title track ‘You Make Me’. This music video is a wild ride man. It feels like they put an entire movie in a little over four minutes. Wonpil really said, let me just display all of my vocal kills.

Next up is ‘Healer’ and it’s a rather interesting mix of genres. We get some rock mixed with house and disco. I love the groovy, hella catchy chorus. I love the chanting in the bridge but kind of wish that they had spruced up the last chorus a bit more.

We slide right into the song ‘Only’. This pop-ballad feels like a great end-of-concert song. It’s the kind of song that sneaks up on you. I love Young K’s section around 1:30. It sounds fabulous with his deeper register which then compliments Wonpil’s vocals nicely. It’s so lovely to hear everyone’s vocals again. Even Dowoon is credited for Backing Vocals in the full credits.

Next up

‘Above the clouds’ follows that up with Jae’s lovely opening. Please do yourself a favor and read the lyrics of this one. It’s a bittersweet moment of loss and acceptance. I choked up a little. The chorus and the bridge with the guitar going off was such a nice build-up. This is the kind of music I adore DAY6 for.

‘ONE’ comes after with some very interesting synths. There’s a bit of an odd jump in the instrumentation sometimes that threw me off a little at first listen. It’s like they skipped half a beat in a couple of places. I do like how they played with the two headphone outlets. Again, I love the chanting in this.

The last track on the EP is ‘so let’s love’. This one hurt. It feels like quite a definite end. Sungjin will be sorely missed while he’s in the army. The electric guitar at one point really went off a little. I loved it.

‘The Book of Us : Negentropy’ by DAY6 is as expected a wonderful listen. Go ahead and check out our previous reviews for DAY6 here
