EP Review: DAY6 – The Book Of Us: The Demon

The loveable members of DAY6 blessed this Monday with their new EP ‘The Book Of Us: The Demon’. Their agency, JYP released a statement that DAY6 will not be doing any promo for this EP because some of the members have been diagnosed with panic disorders and are resting and getting treatment. We at M.E.A.L. wish the members all the best and hope that they’ll feel better soon.

Nonetheless, we wouldn’t be MYDAYS if we didn’t review the new EP. So let’s dive in!

‘The Book Of Us: The Demon’

‘Day and Night’ is the first track and starts beautifully with echoing voices. The lyrics talk about crossed lovers and ‘Day and Night’ really feels true to their style. I love the rhythm and Wonpil going off in the back with his vocals.

Next up is the title track ‘Zombie’ that came with a music video.

First of all, beautiful music video that feels as tragic as the lyrics. When I first saw the teaser of the zombie I thought it would be tongue-in-cheek, but nope. It’s super sad, especially given the circumstances. It feels really personal and quite raw in its honesty. This is the kind of track you’d listen to alone in your room after a hard day. (virtual hugs from me you guys) We also get an English version of ‘ZOMBIE’ as the last song of the EP.

‘Tick Tock’ is up next. I love the drumline in this track. The members’ vocals are stunning as always and the message is rather heartbreaking as well. There’s a groovy little section just before the three minute mark that is AMAZING. I love how it breaks up the song a little bit while still feeling coherent.

With ‘Love me or Leave me’ we get an awesome intro that already has me protecting my feelings because with that title I figured we’d get another heartbreaking ballad. Partly I was right, but this reminds me more of their song ‘Congratulations’. It’s a little bitter in its meaning, but there’s some funky synths going on and their harmonization is brilliant. The tempo is a lot faster than I thought it would be in the beginning.

‘STOP’ reminds me of English rock bands and it is DOPE. The guitar and the distorted echo is so good! The chorus is definitely one of the highlights together with the funky guitar solo. This is going on every playlist I own because good God, I love it.

The sixth track on this EP is ‘1 to 10’. This is probably the first song that doesn’t make me sad. Ironically, it is also the shortest track on the EP. Sungjin honey, you’re doing amazing! I love his raspy voice so much.

Next up is ‘Afraid’ and we’re back to sad hours. They talk about being bad for the other person in a relationship but they can’t break up because they’re afraid of being alone. And that is just a whole bag of mixed emotions. The ‘What Should I do’ shouting is brilliant and relatable. The little guitar outro feels very unresolved and it makes sense because I don’t think they figured out what to do.

Overall

What an EP. ‘The Book Of Us: Demon’ by DAY6 kind of made my heart hurt. What a beautifully tragic EP. I just have to mention that the cover art for this was a really good choice. The tangled and blurry lines make sense with the overall feel of the EP and the meaning of the lyrics.

This lovely person on Twitter, made translations for all of the songs. If you want to cry, go take a look.
