Rapper in the Spotlight: ‘Vinxen’

Today we are introducing a brand new segment for the Hip Hop lovers among us. Good music comes in many genres and languages. In our series ‘Rapper in the Spotlight’ we will be digging into our favourite Korean hip-hop artists music, their journey and the reason why we absolutely love them.

Our first feature is one of my personal favorites. This artist, at such a young age has dared to speak about issues that are still rather taboo in the society where he lives.

He has given a voice to the youth and against popular opinion, he has stuck to his beliefs and has created music about his worries, pain and experiences.

On the Top

Vinxen (Lee Byung Jae) stepped into the spotlight after his participation in High School Rapper 2, even though he finished in third place, his performances left many speechless. From the very beginning he touched the public’s heart with his deeply personal lyrics, his honesty and incredible rapping skills.

The aftermath

Vinxen is also the founder of the Kiff Clan, a hip hop crew featuring many of the participants of High School Rapper season 1 and 2. This group is full of incredible talents, so make sure to keep an eye on them because any release is sure to be incredible.

After his participation in the survival show Vinxen was signed under Romantic Factory  the same agency housing the rapper OVAN.

Vixen has been one of my favorite discoveries of 2019. Listen to his full playlist, there is not a single bad song. Make sure to pay attention to the lyrics because they’re all beautifully written, soulful and extremely meaningful.

His latest release especially holds a special place in my heart. In the song ‘Skin’ he speaks about deeply personal experiences. The lyrics flow beautifully and one of my favourite parts go like this:

“(…) getting hurt by relationships with others,
it’s always my share, it’s easy for you,
not to be hurt by bad people,
I just have to be the worst,
but I don’t want it (…)”

The music video is just stunning and sets the tone perfectly:

He also wrote a song for the entertainer Yoo Jae-Seok and sang it when he was a guest on the TV program ‘Happy Together’. In the lyrics he asks the entertainer about his worries whilst sharing his too.

“Have you ever cried behind the cameras, too?
Have you concealed your feelings for others, too?
Have you ever cried behind the cameras, too?
Have you concealed your feelings for others, too?
You just look perfect to us.”

Needless to say, Vinxen is a very talented rapper, I will be expecting for more of his releases because I’m sure they will be incredible. In the meanwhile, listen to all of his songs. Link below.

Let us know if you have listened to any of Vinxen’s songs and if you love him as much as we do.
