EP Review: NU’EST – The Table

2019 has been a great year for NU’EST. The five member boy group under PLEDIS Entertainment has been rocking the charts. Especially after they released ‘BET BET’ which became a massive hit with the YouTube views currently over five million views.

On Monday they released their seventh EP ‘The Table’ and it does not disappoint. According to the description on their music video for the title track ‘Love Me’ the entire EP are love stories that you can share around the dinner table. In ‘Love Me’ they want to give the message that people should be more honest with their feelings and their love.

Take a look at the music video because it’s adorable and super retro. And at one point Baekho, the main vocalist, even scoops out popcorn out of a cloud. It’s super cute. Baekho also has writing credits on all of the songs on the EP. As does JR, the leader and main rapper.

‘Call Me Back’ is the opening track for ‘The Table’. It’s a funky song, with a very catchy chorus. I especially love it when they’re talk-singing together. I was wondering why I got Seventeen vibes, it makes sense. NU’EST is under the same company and producer Bumzu is a frequent collaborator with Seventeen.

‘Love Me’ is the second track which is followed by ‘ONE TWO THREE’. This feels very old school and fun. Also Baekho, hitting that high note. I see you, I hear you, you’re doing amazing.

‘Trust Me’ starts off amazingly with a cool beat set by an electric guitar before anything else jumps in and is carried throughout most of the song. This feels a little bit more like their previous works in comparison with everything else. And then the outro again with the beautiful electric guitar. Like a gorgeous book, with two beautiful bookends.

Then the fifth track of the EP; ‘Stay up all night’. This songs feels so soft. As if you’re going to stay up all night and watch the stars in your pyjamas, huddled under blankets and maybe reminisce about bad break-ups. At one point the instrumentals disappear completely apart from the snaps. It focuses completely on the vocals and it is stunning.

The last number is ‘If we’. The song feels a little bit sadder, a little bit more melancholic than the others. It’s basically a break-up song, reflecting on his past love and not being sure if it was love at all.

This is the first EP after they finished the Knights story line. So a different sound, but overall the entire oeuvre sounds very soft and the B-tracks quite sad. The boys really delivered with the lyrics, the vocals and the rap. It’s an EP to definitely be proud of.
