Offstage: Jung Jae-il

We’re back with a new Offstage and this time I really wanted to put some spotlight on music composer Jung Jae-il. You’ve undoubtedly heard some of his work because he has composed several box office hits and big Netflix productions. Let’s take a closer look!

Jung Jae-il is a graduate of Seoul Jazz Academy. He was in several bands he has released a couple of his own releases.

Watch him play the piano below.

Film Scores

Jung Jae-il has composed the soundtrack for several films starting in 1997 for the docudrama ‘Bad Movie’.

In 2001 he co-created the soundtrack for ‘Flower Island’. The film won a ton of awards for Best New Director and Best First Film at various festivals.

He also co-composed the OST for the action film ‘Resurrection of the Little Match Girl’.

A couple of years later he helped create the sound for the very popular ‘Temptation of Wolves’.

He co-composed several other films throughout the early 2000s and 2010s like ‘Marine Boy’, ‘Baram’ and ‘Sea Fog’.

His first big breakthrough came in 2017 when he scored the Bong Joon-ho film ‘Okja’.

The two teamed up again for the global success ‘Parasite’ for which he won Best Score at the Grand Bell Awards and the Buil Film Awards. If you don’t know Kang Echae, please do yourself a favor and listen to the album ‘Radical Paradise’. It’s fantastic.

He also scored the Hirokazu Kore-eda film ‘Broker’ that came out last year in 2022.

In 2021 Jung Jae-Il created the soundtrack for the massive hit ‘Squid Game’. He was even nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.

Jung Jae-Il is an incredible composer and has created beautiful scores. He already has some incredible projects under his belt and is listed to work on ‘Micky 17’ which is an upcoming science fiction film written and directed by Bong Joon-ho.
