K-Drama Review: Crash Landing On You

Today’s drama review is about a drama that everyone talked about. I saw it everywhere on my Instagram and YouTube too. I was glad the drama finished because I could finally binge watch it, and see what was the hype about. Let me tell you it did not disappoint.

‘Crash Landing On You’ is a 2019-2020 drama written by Park Ji-eun and directed by Lee Jeong-hyo. It aired on TvN. Starring Hyun Bin as Ri Jeong-hyuk and Son Ye-jin as Yoon Se-ri, this drama tells the story of Se-ri, a business woman who accidentally lands in North Korea after an unexpected storm occurs while she was paragliding.

This drama develops mainly in North Korea and shows a part of the country’s society. It shows many aspects like the gap between the rich and the poor or the ones who live in the city and the countryside. After watching it, I became quite curious about how accurate this drama was and bumped into this video on youtube. Check it out.

Forbidden Love

In the drama Jeong-hyuk and Se-ri develop romantic feelings for each other, but they can’t be together as she is from South Korea and he is a captain in the North Korean army. They both come from different worlds and throughout the drama you can see how they both learn from each other. They are aware however that their separation is inevitable.

This drama had a very mature approach to love, and I really enjoyed that. Both characters wanted to protect each other. Though they knew that the best protection was to separate and go back to the worlds they belonged in.

Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin did an amazing job delivering the story. Their chemistry was out of this world. They made many of their scenes look super romantic, intimate and heartfelt.

Friendships and Family

The writer of ‘Crash Landing On You’ did an incredible job developing the different storylines in the drama. One of my favourite plot lines were the relationships between Jeong-hyuk and his team in the military and the one of Se-ri with the ladies of the village.

Jeong-hyuk’s relationship with his subordinates was basically the one of a father and his sons. In the story he truly looked after them and worried about their well being mentally and physically. At the same time, the drama also shows his relationship with his parents and the bond they have. This was something I didn’t expect in the drama and I really liked how their family dynamic was shown.

Se-ri becomes acquainted with the ladies of the village and they form a beautiful bond. They share personal stories and they learn from each other’s experiences. They even share the fashion, it is something candid and really fun to watch. On the other hand, the drama also gives a glimpse of Se-ri’s complicated relationship with her family, where power seems to come first.

A second love story to remember

‘Crash Landing On You’ also had one of the best secondary couples I have seen in a while. Portrayed by Kim Jung-hyun, and Seo Ji-hye, Gu Seung-joon and Seo Dan respectively, are two people that come from completely different places and are the most unlikely match. However, their experiences bring them together in one of the most fun and also unexpected love story.

The chemistry between these two actors was incredible, and even though I would have loved seeing more of this couple, I feel that their love story developed well even though it was sad at times.

Finals Thoughts

‘Crash Landing On You’ deserved all the hype surrounding it. Overall, I felt that it was a good drama and even though it didn’t end how I wanted it to end, I really liked how they depicted the life of people living in North Korea in comparison to the South.

You can watch this full drama in Netflix. Here is the trailer.
