We’re back with another K-Cover, and this is certainly a special one! I have to admit that lately I’ve been obsessed with Raon’s cover of ‘Red Ties’ by Ahn Ye Eun. It feels like an unlikely combination -as you’re about to see- but the result is spectacular.
Red Ties – Ahn Ye Eun
Now, in case K-indie tends to slip past your radar, go check our feature about Ahn Ye Eun because I guarantee you’re missing out (I speak from experience). She has such a unique sound and style that makes her really stand out among other singers. Her songs and her signing style mix jazz, folk and pop elements and the result is simply amazing.
She apparently wrote ‘Red Ties’ inspired by the huge hit film ‘The King and the Clown’, from the perspective of Gong Gil. Honestly, this just makes the heavy and depressing lyrics hit even harder. It was later included in the soundtrack for the sageuk drama ‘The Rebel’ (a great retelling of Hong Gil Dong, a Korean Robin Hood of sorts).
Raon Lee
Raon Lee, is an amazing singer who *mainly* does covers of anime songs. So you’ll understand when I say I was shook when I heard this cover, as she sings the whole thing in a more traditional style. While it’s not the first time she does a K-trad (let’s call it that) cover, they’re so few and far between that it’s still surprising.
Her voice is very powerful yet melodic, and really shines in metal or rock-pop songs, but as you’ll notice from her version of ‘Red Ties’ is that she can twist her vocals and do anything well.
She recently released the official version of ‘Promise‘, for the soundtrack of an internationally popular Korean mobile game called Epic7. You can follow her on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Insta, and even Twitch. Side-note, I especially appreciate how all the videos have Korean, Japanese, and English subtitles. But enough gushing from me: on to the song!
