EP Review: A.C.E – Under Cover: The Mad Squad

A.C.E is back with their third EP: ‘Under Cover: The Mad Squad’. This five boy idol group doesn’t disappoint.

Their music and MV’s are always on point. I remember seeing ‘Under Cover’ from their previous comeback and I was shook! They’re all serving looks and their make-up game is always on point. I need a tutorial, really. Help a girl out.

‘Under Cover: The Mad Squad’ starts off with an instrumental song: ‘Intro: Escape’. It’s a very heavy EDM/electronic/dubsteppy mix. I’m kind of reminded of Skrillex actually. My heart is still recovering from listening to the song. This type of music gives me heart palpitations, in a good way.

The second track is their title track: ‘SAVAGE’. This song goes off! The drop in the chorus is amazing and the rapline is straight up savage (pun intended obviously). The MV is incredible. The colors and the different settings are beautiful. Also Byeongkwan is reminding me of an early Zico with his blonde braids.

‘Slow Dive’ is the third single on the EP. It’s surprisingly soft, without any heavy EDM drop. I mean there’s still a drop, but it’s not as shocking as the one in ‘SAVAGE’. I love the harmonization in the background. Vocal line pulling through.

The next track is ‘So Sick’. It’s another slow song. It’s so soft, especially with the little tinkles. I’d love to hear an acoustic version of this.

‘Holiday’ is up next. It’s a funky, fun song. It’s the perfect soundtrack for a beach day. I can already see the MV in front of me, them in white, loose shirts, playing with a couple of beach balls. Maybe even one of the members on one of those inflatable flamingos.

Then the last track of the EP is ‘Take Me Higher – Complete Version’. The earlier version they dropped in June of 2018 was with one of the members missing. Chan was promoting with UNB, a temporary unit from the TV show ‘The Unit’. It’s sort of like X1 and Wanna One from Produce 101. So in this version Chan has lines and is able to sing with the rest of his members. That’s just so wholesome. I love it.

A lovely EP overall, I just wish that ‘Holiday’ had been released somewhere in the summer,  maybe as a digital single. Because it would have made my summer even better.

Stop sleeping on A.C.E, they’re definitely worth your attention.
