[Review] SEVENTEEN – HAPPY BURSTDAY

The boys from SEVENTEEN are back to celebrate their 10th debut anniversary with ‘HAPPY BURSTDAY’. This is their fifth full-length album. I’ve been following their journey for a long time, so let’s dive right in!

HAPPY BURSTDAY – SEVENTEEN

We start off with ‘HBD‘. It’s a rock track with a high energy level and a cute message. We’re celebrating their tenth anniversary after all!

Next up is their title track ‘Thunder‘. This is such a fun title track! It’s a blend of EDM and pop and will leave you hyped up! I loved the whistle in the backing track and all of the energy and charisma delivered.

Honestly, CARATs are well fed with the visuals and the sound in this MV.

After that comes the track ‘Bad Influence’ which was written and produced by Pharrell Williams which is super sick by the way. It’s a sexy track with an 808 drum bass and a killer hook.

The following tracks are all solo numbers from the members, including Jeonghan who’s currently fulfilling his mandatory military service.

The first solo track is ‘SKYFALL’ by The8. This is a track that blends jersey club to a garage house beat. It’s such a dreamy, synth heaven moment. I literally want to go clubbing to this track. The lasers would definitely pop off.

‘Fortunate Change’ is Joshua’s solo. It “expresses the pleasant excitement that ‘to someone in love, everything looks new, and the world feels warm’.” It’s a dreamy track with a fun beat and fresh instrumentals that create a jazzy summer track.

‘99.9%’ is Wonwoo’s solo track. It’s a love confession with a band sound and some delicious brass and jazzy piano. I’m absolutely in love with this track. It’s just so adorable and fresh and earnest.

Seungkwan follows that with his track ‘Raindrops’. As expected, Seungkwan tugs at our heartstrings with this stunning rock ballad. It’s bittersweet in its message but by god is it pretty.

Next up is ‘Damage’ which is Hoshi’s solo featuring Timbaland. That’s such an iconic feature by the way. The bass is sexy and seductive and I really enjoyed the progression and the chorus. I’m a bit sad we couldn’t actually get a verse by Timbaland.

Mingyu is up with his solo ‘Shake it off’. We’re going for House music with an impressive beat and honestly this is a track you can’t sit still to. It’s super sick and a total club banger.

‘Happy Virus’ is DK’s solo and this fits him so well. It’s a country pop track with a warm, happy energy that states that he will protect your most precious smile which is honestly the sweetest thing.

‘Destiny’ is Woozi’s solo. It’s a ballad with his soft, airy vocals that speak about how everything that has happened so far is not just by chance, but designed by fate. The guitar solo is super dope.

Vernon is up next with ‘Shining Star’. This is a super fun and fresh track with a cool groove and a band sound. I really enjoyed this one!

Gemini’ is the solo by Jun. It’s a blend of Afrobeats and electronica. It makes for a super interesting listen and “contains a message of not giving up on one’s lost self and of finding it again.”

Dino’s solo ‘TRIGGER’ takes us back to 2000s hip-hop and R&B. It has a lovely melody to it and Dino really did a good job with his vocals. I can’t wait to see the choreography for this!

‘Coincidence’ is Jeonghan’s solo. It’s a ballad with a beautiful instrumentation with warm guitars and even warmer vocals. This is lovely.

We close off the album with SEVENTEEN leader S.Coup’s solo ‘Jungle’. We’re getting an alternative Afro hip-hop based track with a lot of power. This is such a vibe!
