[Review] GFRIEND -回: Song of the Sirens

The amazing girls of GFRIEND are back with their new EP ‘回: Song of the Sirens’. Ever since the comeback teasers I’ve been really looking forward to this release because they looked absolutely stunning and the entire concept looked really intriguing.

回: Song of the Sirens

The opening track is their title track ‘Apple’. In the album introduction they mentioned that this album is about the girls shaking before temptation. So the apple makes total sense if we view it from a biblical standpoint. As expected the visuals are amazing. The song itself is a total earworm and has beautiful vocals. The bass line is addictive and really helps drive the song forward.

Next up is ‘Eye of the Storm’. The anime like intro is so dope. There is so much going on in the instrumentation. We get a lot of shifts with the rhythm but it makes it a very dynamic track. You totally feel like you’re being swept away by a typhoon.

‘Room of Mirrors’ follows that and gives is the classic GFRIEND sound. This mid-tempo ballad gives some great spotlight to the vocals. The outro with the piano gave me actual chills. I desperately need a live version of this.

The fourth track on the EP is ‘Tarot Cards’. This high paced track has some amazing electric guitar in the instrumentation. Another anime-like song, but they make it work so well.

After that we get ‘Crème Brûlée’. It’s a total shift in vibe from the rest of the album. It kind of feels like a summer song with those synths. Beautiful vocals and a very laid back sound that I can’t be mad about. Though it feels a bit disjointed from the rest of the EP.

‘Stairs in the North’ is the last song. We get a sweet acoustic opening for this ballad. There are also gorgeous strings in the background that help create a very rich feel to this track.

Overall

‘回: Song of the Sirens’ by GFRIEND is a wonderful addition to their discography. I really dig the more mature sound of this release. I wonder how all of these are going to fit into their storyline. I’m going to wait a couple of days before reading about the theories.

What’s new about this EP is the fact that the members helped with the writing and composing. The growth y’all. Eunha and Yuju worked on ‘Apple’, Umji and Yuju both worked on ‘Eye of the Storm’ and Eunha, Yuju and Umji also collabed on ‘Tarot Cards’.
