[Review] Car, the garden – Absence

Indie singer Car, the garden released his new EP ‘Absence’ today and I’m ready to get my feelings wrecked, so let’s dive right in.

Absence

We start off with the track ‘My whole world’ which is a love song to its core. I am in love with the little xylophone sounds. It adds a certain innocent charm to it. When the guitars came in I was shook. It becomes so groovy! They play with the ebb and flow of the track so excellently. What a great start.

‘The Wave’ comes next and despite the sad message, it’s not a horribly sad song. The verses get a tinge melancholy, and the chorus literally says ‘I cry all the time’. But the build-up is so tasty. There’s a choir in there as well! I’m utterly in love.

Next up is the title track ‘Doesn’t matter’. The music video came straight out of a fanfiction AU where you have a florist and a mechanic. It’s stunning and wholesome and it kind of made my day. Though I’m quite dissatisfied with the ending of the MV.

‘Long winter’ featuring O3ohn follows that. Their harmonies are amazing and reminds me of late nineties English indie folk music. The acoustic guitar fits it so well.

The last track is the only single that was written by someone other than Car, the garden. Popular songwriter Chang Kiha wrote the lyrics for ‘Blue glass bottle’. I really enjoyed listening to this one, the fact that they played with the headphone jacks is fun and makes it more dynamic. The electronic sounds at the end were a surprise, but a welcome one.
