[Patreon Exclusive Review] Love Playlist

Love Playlist

Love Playlist is up there as one of my favourite web-dramas. With four seasons and one being rumored to be on the make, ‘Love Playlist’ is a coming-of-age web series that talks about love, relationships, friendship and issues that many college students go through.

This web-drama ventures into the insecurities, feelings and thoughts of each one of their characters by focusing each episode on the life of each character from their point of view.

I personally felt that I was walking into a novel in which my favourite characters narrate their life from their own perspective and that caught my eye straight away. In the long run this type of narration helps the characters to become more relatable and feel closer to the viewers, and the full story is lighthearted, easy to watch, not complicated at all and very straight forward.

It’s the perfect casual watch.

Season 1: four friends into the world

In the first season of this web drama we get to know the four friends: Lee Hyun Seung, Han Jae In, Kim Min Woo and Kwak Jun Mo in the very first episode. This quartet become close after Hyun Seung loses a game and is forced to go into a club where Jae In was a member and asked for her number to go on a group date.

After this we get a very awkward group date in which at the very end we see Jae In as more of a female friend than a love interest after hanging out with them, ending up in this quartet being together in their college music club ‘um um um’.

Right at the beginning of the second episode we get to know the freshman Jung Ji Won (Jung Shin Hye), who becomes Hyun Seung’s (Kim Hyun Suk) girlfriend. This adorable couple will give us four seasons of puppy love, adorable and sad moments that are light hearted and also slightly relatable.

For the rest of the season we get to know these characters’ relationships. The crush that Jae In (Lee Yoo Jin) has on Hyun Seung, her drunken confession, how Ji Won feels about her love interest having a female friend to finally come to an end on the eighth episode with the introduction of Kang Yoon (Park Jung Woo). He’s an engineering student who works part time at the bars where the members of the ‘um um um’ club go and has a crush on Jae In.

Season 2: New friends, more drinking and heartbreaks

Season 2 has twelve episodes and starts off with Jae In’s point of view, and how she feels about Hyun Seung’s rejection, her newest love interest and we also get to know about Min Woo’s (Choi Hee Seung) crush on her this season.

In episode 3 we get to know a new character Kim Do Young (Min Hyo Won), a college student who has financial issues but works hard to pay her bills. She is fully aware of others being attracted to her because of her beauty, but at the same time she is down to earth. She becomes the love interest of Jun Mo (Im Hwi Jin) and these two must be one of the most adorkable couples I have seen.

As the story develops we get to know more about Kang Yoon, how he tries to become closer with Jae In, ending up in them starting to date after she decides to take the first step and ask him out (FEMALE POWER).

This season also explores female and male points of view in dating, anniversaries and ends up in our favourite puppy couple breaking up and narrating their perspective of their break-up and how they handled their troubled feelings and eventually got back together.

Season 3: New Friends, more complicated relationships and new faces

Season 3 starts off with one of my favourite episodes of this web drama ‘Depressing Moment After a Breakup’. In this episode we find out that our puppy couple broke up again and we get Hyun Seung’s guide to overcome the blues after a breakup, we get his narration as if he was talking to Ji Won and that just made it extra adorable.

In episode 2 we get to know more about Do Young and Joon Mo’s relationship and how they have just seen each other for months but never started officially dating. Can I just say how adorable this pair is? They are extra shy and they aren’t the best ones with words but under pressure these two are bravest.

This season develops and we get to know more about Choi Seung Hyuk (Kim Woo Suk). We had seen him a couple of times in the previous season but this time we find out his interest in Ji Won and how hard he tries to get her heart despite the fact that she is still in love with Hyun Seung.

We also have new members in the ‘um um um’ club, Jeoung Pu Rum (Park Shi An) and Park Ha Neul (Bae Hyun Sung). These two besties have known each other since high school but things change after Ha Neul shows his interest in her, making their relationship awkward afterwards.

Towards the end of this season we go back to our puppy love couple to find out the truth behind their break up. Hyun Seung felt pressured as he wasn’t able to give Ji Won expensive presents for special dates, leading him to take several part time jobs. Ji Won felt neglected as she couldn’t see him as often and she felt that he was taking her for granted, leaving these two with no other option but breaking up.

After having a heart to heart, Hyun Seung and Ji Won end up walking to her house together and as we all expected he stays over. They sleep together and after a few misunderstandings they get back together but this time it seems that our lovely couple is finally growing up and becoming more mature.

The journey of these two was at times rather frustrating, their miscommunication and complexes led them to hurt each other’s feelings. I had second lead syndrome with Seung Hyuk since season two, he was perfect for Ji Won, but the heart wants what it wants (or the writer wants what they want).

Season 4: Military, more misunderstanding and unknown breakups

Season 4 starts and in this one we get the fantastic cameo of the Queen JeA from Brown Eyed Girls and I loved the fact that I could see her rocking her role even if it was tiny.

Jun Mi and Min Woo have enlisted and we also find out that Jae In and Kang Yoon broke up when he was in his military service when they end up taking the same class. Everything goes well and it isn’t as awkward until these two end up in a group assignment with their classmates  Seo Ji Min and Joo Chan (Jung Jun Hwan).

Seo Ji Min (Kim Sae Ron) becomes interested in Ha Neul but he is still in love with Pu Reum, who has friendzoned him.

Ha Neul and Pu Reu become school ambassadors and ask part of their job they have to interview interesting characters in the school. Ji Min being the cheer squad leader is the first person they interview, and as soon as the interview starts they become close friends.

Ha Neul and Ji Min become closer and he starts developing feelings for her but things become tangled after she finds a picture of him kissing Pu Reum.

Ji Min becomes cold towards him, making him realise his feelings for her. He runs to speak with her and clear the situation after he notices that she had seen the picture, and after a very short but honest talk, we get a new adorable and super beautiful couple added to this web drama.

Yoo Jin is preparing for her end of year showcase, but she misses her friends as two enlisted and one spends most of his time with his girlfriend. She feels let down but in a change of events we get a wholesome reunion with the quartet where they go do their favourite group activity; Drinking.

Towards the end of the season our puppy couple is still together and growing strong, Hyun Seung is enlisting in the military, but everything is going well between them.

In our final episode we have all the members of the ‘um um um’ club together including now Ji Min, and we have a lovely closure of the journey of these characters. However a new season is rumored to be in the making.

You can watch all the seasons of this web drama below.
