K-Drama Review: Love Alarm (2019)

Netflix is back with a new K-drama and after ‘My First First Love’, I couldn’t be more thrilled about it. If you have been reading my reviews, you may know by now that I LOVE cute and light-hearted dramas and Netflix’s newest addition ‘Love Alarm’ fits perfectly into those two categories.

Based on the webtoon by the same name, ‘Love Alarm’ tells the story of a parallel reality (I don’t think we are too far from it) where an app is able to tell you if anyone within a 10 meter radius has romantic feelings for you (dating apps 2.0).

This drama stars big names Kim So-hyun, Song Kang and Jung Ga-ram. Besides exploring the conflicts related to the development and use of the app, it also shows how people from a very young age start to see themselves as worthless based entirely on the amount of hearts.

This series has a lot of light-hearted moments, but it also tackles the dark side of this type of technology. In many cases it leads to serious psychological issues, internal conflict and lack of self esteem.

I personally liked how the writer and producers were able to make this drama so wholesome by finding the middle ground and showing young and flourishing love in contrast with the consequence of relying too much on technology to find love.

One thing I’m not liking are the open endings that pop up more and more these days. ‘Love Alarm’ has one of those. I just hope netflix releases a second season and soon, because I want to know how it ends. We will be waiting.

In the meanwhile, take a look at the trailer:
