Album Review: Taeyeon – Purpose – The 2nd Album

On Monday Taeyeon blessed the world with her latest album. ‘Purpose – The 2nd Album’ has ten songs of absolute goodness. So let’s take a look at each song and what makes it so amazing.

‘Here I Am’ is the opener. What starts off very soft and restrained, goes into power vocals for the chorus. I love the little piano segments and the layered voice. It’s a stunning way to start off the album. Reminding everyone that she’s here to conquer.

Next up we have the title track: ‘Spark’. The vocal runs give me so many feelings. What an amazing song. It’s incredibly catchy and easy to sing along to (though we’ll never be able to match the quality Taeyeon’s voice has). This song speaks of a self-confidence that I am living for!

Though I found it a little strange that the music video was released later than the album. I’d actually started listening to the album and a couple of songs in I got a YouTube alert that SM finally released her MV.

Find Me’ is the next song on ‘Purpose’. There are some amazing drums working overtime in the background. I feel like this song is somewhat pop-rock inspired. I really wanna hear a live performance of this. Taeyeon’s rich voice works so well with this.

Love You Like Crazy’ sounds a little bit grittier. There’s a lot of energy in the song, though it gets turned down a lot for the bridge.

Now this next one is one of my favorite songs of the album. ‘LOL’ surprised me with the jazzy opening. Then the tempo picks up for like a couple of seconds only to slow down again, a little bit of a whiplash. But I’m loving it. It sounds like it could be a James Bond soundtrack. It’s super sexy. 10/10

Track number six is ‘Better Babe’. The song starts off with ambient noise which kind of threw me for a loop after ‘LOL’. The moment where they pause all of the instrumentals and only Taeyeon’s voice remains, is *chef’s kiss*. Her vocals are definitely the driving force in this song. It’s very powerful without being overwhelming. The outro with the strings definitely helps with that.

Wine’ brings the intensity down a notch. It’s a great moment for a palate cleanser with a soft ballad. The little wind chimes are a perfect addition. Honestly, this made me a bit emotional. It kind of makes me feel like I should have this song on repeat on a gray day with a glass of wine, just staring out the window.

‘Do You Love Me?’ is even softer than ‘Wine’. It sounds a little bit more whimsical as well. For some reason I’m getting early Christmas season vibes, even though the lyrics are not about that at all.

Number nine on the album is ‘City Love’, Taeyeon is bringing something more upbeat again. It’s basically about a date in a busy city at night. It sounds fun, the piano is funky and the ‘city love’ is so catchy, I’m going to have this song stuck in my head all day.

Gravity’ is the last song of ‘Purpose – The 2nd Album’. I love everything about this so much. I think with the darker tone of this album, this is the perfect track to end with. It feels more grounded, a little bit more hopeful. Also just look at these gorgeous lyrics.

Taeyeon is an amazing vocalist and she’s able to convey so much emotion in each and every song I can feel it to my core. She’s a true artist and I’m sure this album will do great.
