Album Review: HEIZE – Late Autumn

HEIZE has blessed us with a brand new EP: ‘Late Autumn’ so I decided to write about it. Basically I’m a sucker for everything she brings out.

First off, if you want to know more about the goddess that she is, go check out our DisKovery With A K episode which you can go check out here.

‘Late Autumn’ is her fifth album and the entire thing is a walk through a forest in autumn. It’s amazing and also somehow gives you all the feels, you know, the sad ones. It’s not just a walk through the forest, it’s a walk after a break-up through that forest.

The EP has six songs. The first one is ‘Falling Leaves Are Beautiful’ is also the title track. It’s a sad break-up song especially because they’ve already come to terms with that fact.

Here’s the accompanying music video.

The second track is: ‘Late Autumn’ featuring Crush. It’s another break-up song but with this one it feels more bittersweet. The vocals feel a bit more desperate and the tempo is a bit faster. Crush as always is a lovely artist to collab with.

Then there is ‘Diary’. This feels like quintessential HEIZE. The vocals are beautiful as they always are, but during some parts the instrumentals are so sparse and almost pushed back that the vocals become way more prominent. It creates its own magic.

Fourth on the list is ‘DAUM’. This is a collab between her and Colde. It’s like some of M.E.A.L.’s favorite artists in one album. We had an entire DisKovery With A K episode dedicated to Colde as well. For some reason this feels a little bit more upbeat, than the others which to be honest doesn’t mean a lot because they’re all quite slow and soft.

‘Being Freezed’ is stunning. The layered vocals in the chorus make the entire song for me. It makes it way more haunting. I think that where the other songs were autumn-like in metaphors, this leads us into winter. In the lyrics she speaks about literally freezing due to being alone and being without his/her embrace.

My personal favorite of this EP has to be ‘Missed Call’. The beautiful piano intro that follows with slow strings just takes me places. Honestly it’s quite surprising that this song was included into the EP, as it feels like a divergence of her normal tone. It’s an instrumental track and it’s only 1:45 min long. I think that’s my only critique, the fact that it is too short.

This entire EP did not disappoint one bit. Though I love HEIZE’s funky songs, I thoroughly enjoy her slow songs as well. Stanning a true icon in the Korean Music Industry.
