Purple Hyacinth banner - Kieran and Lauren

[WebToon] Purple Hyacinth

For this week’s WebToon feature we’re reading the mystery series ‘Purple Hyacinth‘ by Ephemerys and Sophism. It took me a while, but I finally jumped on the ‘Purple Hyacinth’ bandwagon; and wow, what a ride! Came for the soundtrack, stayed for Kieran’s piercing gaze. *swoons*

The story

Lauren has the ability to detect the lies in others’ words… But this doesn’t mean she can divine the truth as well. Still, for a police officer, it’s an extremely handy skill. When a terrorist attack by an organization named ‘Phantom Scythe’ many years back plunged the world in turmoil, she was unable to save her friend. Determined to find out who is behind that attack, and bring an end to Phantom Scythe, she ends up teaming up with an unlikely partner; The Scythe’s most notorious assassin, known as the ‘Purple Hyacinth’. But who is Kieran really and what are his reasons for going against the Scythe?

The verdict

The main characters have such incredible chemistry. Every episode just keeps you at the end of your seat. I think I’ve not been as enamoured with a 2D guy since Dimitri from Fire Emblem. Damn those eyes Kieran! Lauren is no dainty daisy either. She’s such an incredible heroine. I particularly enjoy her interactions and dynamic with her police friends Kym and William. Also, I hard ship those two. Perfect opposites attract pairing.

The plot keeps getting thicker and the pacing is so satisfying and frustrating at the same time! It really draws you in and makes you want to find out the truth. The writing, the art, the music – they’re like a perfect match made in Webtoon heaven.

It’s no mystery why this Webtoon has been a fan favourite since launch. Honestly, if there’s one reason I’m glad I didn’t read it sooner… It’s that waiting for Season 2 would have killed me. So, points for excellent timing! If you want to read a compelling mystery drama series, definitely give Purple Hyacinth a read.
