[Review] Young K – Eternal

Young K from the band DAY6, released his first solo EP ‘Eternal’. Let’s dive right in because I’m expecting high quality!

Eternal

We start off with ‘best song’ which starts off great with some beatboxing. It’s a lovely track that is well-layered and really feels like some 70s soul music. I like the addition of the female choir in the back, though I think that’s a sample.

Next up is the title track ‘Guard You’ which is a pop rock track. It’s very *emo*. Young K’s smokey eye shadow is popping off. The lyrics are very dramatic and fit the emo vibe. It’s a really cool track but I do wish that they had used the electric guitar a bit differently to create some more texture to the track. For me, it lacked that extra punch.

‘not gonna love’ comes next with some more grunge influences. This one is so dope! What an interesting combination of more electronic elements and the grunge instrumentals. The track kind of feels like a DAY6 song.

Up next

The track ‘Microphone’ featuring R&B singer Dvwn is the only collab on the mini. The harmonies in this one are super nice! It’s such a smooth listen. The instrumentals are turned down a bit, with more acoustic guitar to create a very warm sound. The lyrics are very wholesome. The electric guitar in the bridge is NICE.

‘want to love you’ is next. We get a wonderful ballad, with some really soft vocals by Young K. It’s a really wonderful, soothing listen. It’s very theatrical, especially when the bridge comes in. This might just be one of my favorite songs of the album.

We get a bit more of a folksy vibe in ‘come as you are’. The scale of this one feels very small and intimate. About halfway, there are more layers coming in and it feels like a very natural progression. I like how in the bridge he goes up higher with his vocals. This begs for a live performance.

Closing off, we have ‘goodnight, dear’. This soft lullaby has some beautiful instrumentation. I’m in love with the violin and the combination of Young K’s warm, rich vocals. It’s wonderful.

Overall, ‘Eternal’ by Young K is a really great mini-album. It’s a smooth listen that shows a variety of genres and stories. Young K is enlisting in the army at the end of October, so this feels a bit like a temporary goodbye.
