[Review] Tomorrow

For this week’s review we’re taking a closer look at the MBC K-drama ‘Tomorrow’. The series aired on a weekly basis on Netflix from April till the end of May.

‘Tomorrow’ is a sixteen episode drama that was based on the Naver WebToon ‘Tomorrow’ by Llama. The series was directed by Kim Tae-yoon and Sung Chi-wook.

The cast in this show is insane. We have Kim Hae-Sook, Kim Hee-sun, Rowoon, Lee Soo-hyuk and Yoon Ji-on. The acting was top notch and they really helped sell this story.

Plot

We follow the character Choi Jun-Woong portrayed by SF9’s Rowoon. He’s trying really hard to find a job. He goes to countless interviews and seems to do a good job during them. However, nepotism often strikes and he loses quite a few chances.

After receiving another text, he feels quite disheartened and takes the long way home. While walking on a bridge he gets into an accident. Someone on the bridge was trying to take their own life. As he’s trying to pull the person down from the ledge, he meets two grim reapers who he’ll be working closely with for the next couple of months. That is, after he falls off the bridge trying to help the person.

When he wakes up he meets Kim Hae-Sook’s character, who is the king of heaven and the leader of Jumadeung. She explains that his body is currently in a coma, whereas his soul is currently with her at the office. The options are to either work for Jumadeung for six months, and wake up, or go back to his body and be in a coma for three years. He goes for the first option.

His new team consists of the two people he met on the bridge. Koo Ryeon, played by Kim Hee-sun, is the team leader of the crisis management team. She has a tragic past and worked her way up from Hell. She’s a no-nonsense, strong character.

The other half of the team is Lim Ryung-Gu played by Yoon Ji-On who was also in ‘The Witch’s Diner’. He also suffered a lot in his past and has a ringtone every day that reminds him to leave.

The crisis team was built to help people who are about to commit suicide. They try to help them see that there is another way to live. The team has to deal with quite a bit of backlash from people within Jumadeung as they don’t see the purpose of the team. In the afterlife, people who commit suicide are automatically sent to Hell.

Overall

This series was pretty amazing. In the first couple of episodes there’s some really cool CGI used that was very impressive.

I like how each story carried its own weight and I like how certain topics were dealt with like bullying, eating disorders, dating violence. The series definitely doesn’t shy away from heavy topics, so be careful if you’re triggered by certain topics.

What I found a bit iffy in the beginning was how harsh people spoke about suicide. Towards the end Rowoon’s character says that Jumadeung is too harsh on people who commit suicide which I agree with. A bit of the lore is based on the concept of christianity with the concept of hell while it also blends in the idea of reincarnation. It’s an interesting world building.

The series ‘Tomorrow’ is definitely worth a watch because of the great plot, worldbuilding and acting performances.
