[Review] Talisman

We’re back with a new movie review and this time we watched the 2022 film ‘Talisman’.

What if you could steal luck and what do you do when you find out someone has been stealing yours?

That’s the question Gi Sam (Joo Young Ho) tries to figure out. Gi Sam is an aspiring actor who’s been struggling to land roles. He goes to a shaman together with a friend and receives a talisman to steal someone’s luck. Things soon become a bit more complicated.

What I found most interesting about the film, directed by Kim Se Seong, is how well it works within its limitations. It’s very obviously a low-budget production, but instead of hurting the story, it often adds to its charm.

Much of the film takes place in a handful of locations, and there are moments where it genuinely feels like you’re watching a stage play. Given that the story revolves around actors, ambition, and performance, that theatrical quality actually feels surprisingly fitting.

It’s a very dialogue heavy story, but the two main actors, Joo Young Ho and Kwon Hae Sung both did a great job.

‘Talisman’ is an interesting watch, so if you have a chance, check it out!
