[Review] Melo is my Nature

Be Melodramatic (Melo is my Nature) is one of those drama gems that more people should know. It hits close to home for many people out there and is so relatable that at times felt more like a real story rather than fiction.

Written and directed by Lee Byeong-heon, along with Kim Young-young and Kim Hy e-young, ‘Melo is My Nature’ is a 2019 drama which aired on JTBC. This production starring Chun Woo-hee, Jeon Yeo-been and Han Ji-eun, is all about new beginnings, life, discovering ourselves and embracing change.

Coming of Age… At 30

This drama focuses on the life of three female friends in their 30s Lim Jin-joo (Woo-hee), Lee Eun-jung (Yeo-been) and Hwang Han-joo (Ji-eun), and how they are trying to embrace new beginnings in their lives.

Jin-joo after being a writer assistant gets a shot to get the drama she wrote filmed and produced. Throughout the drama we get the most iconic quotes by a writer that just gets people out in the real world.

“I love dramas full of love because I won’t love anyone for real” – Jin-joo

She doesn’t want her characters to be perfect but real, and in the process of writing the drama Woo-hee’s character is relatable, fun, smart and quirky.

Eun-jung is a documentary producer with a lingering past, this character is raw, direct and heartfelt. Yeo-been’s interpretation was incredible, she made this role emotionally relatable and very likeable.

Last but not least is Han-joo,  a single mother, she is funny, smart, and has an incredible emotional intelligence. This character felt like the one close friend we have all had that is able to read your thoughts and comfort you. The friendship of these three women was a refreshing gem that is needed a lot more in the drama world.

Friends, Love and Family

‘Melo is My Nature’ doesn’t really follow the regular love story we are used to in the drama world. The relationships were fun, interesting and captivating. It was really refreshing to watch these people trying to sort out their issues just like any of us would do in the real world. It made this drama just so engaging and gripping.

These 3 friends were also family, they looked after and cared for each other. They were the perfect depiction of having your besties as flatmates, sharing a beer or two on an evening, chatting away or even watching you favourite drama, but also being able to be your own person and having your me time without any judgement. This part just made the drama extremely relatable and I absolutely loved it.

The other characters in this drama are as likable as the main ones. Each role in the storyline was fun to watch, and played an important role in the drama. They weren’t left on the sidelines, rather they were developed along with the main ones. It was very wholesome seeing how even secondary characters had such an exquisite development.

Final thoughts

If you are looking for a drama that is definitely not the standard one in dramaland, with a quirky and also real touch, watch ‘Melo is My Nature’. I’m sure many out there will identify with these characters and their lives, friendships, family and even their love lives.
