[Review] LUCY – Childhood

The band LUCY is back with their new full-length album ‘Childhood’. It is a whopping 15 songs long, so let’s dive in right away!

Childhood

We start with the single ‘Knowhow‘. From the get-go, the sound is amazing. The combination of the claps and the piano is great and creates a fun ambience. The rest of the instrumentation slides in and with the violin especially we get a fantastic melody. The vocals on the bridge are super nice!

‘MP3’ comes up next. We’re going Irish! The melody takes me back to Dublin. I can totally see them perform this song in Temple Bar. I love the addition of the flute and the chanting in the bridge.

Next up is the title track ‘PLAY’. The song is about the loss of the childhood sense of wonder and feeling a bit melancholic about missing being able to play without worry. It’s a marvellous track and really encapsulates its message.

’10sec’ is next. We’re going jazzy in this one. It’s a fast paced track that is groovy and has such a lovely instrumentation. I love the touch of brass in the back. The bass is going ham in this and it’s a vibe. I am in love! The bridge is definitely one of the highlights.

Next up is ‘You & Me’. The bass in this is very present again, and I really dig it. The drums are very cool as well. I like smoothness of certain sections. It’s dope.

‘Domino’ features rapper D-Hack. This is not immediately a song I would’ve expected from LUCY. It feels like a remix and a very modern coat. It’s a fun experiment.

Next up

Following that is ‘Foul’. This is peak rock ballad. The angst is fantastic and the vocals are next level. The switch from soft singing to full on belting is awesome. The instrumental break is such a moment!

‘My warm loneliness’ is a ballad that will warm your heart. I love how tiny and fragile this track seems. I desperately want to hear a live version of this under the stars with a full orchestra.

‘Prequel’ is literally a prequel to the track ‘Sequel’ from their second EP ‘Blue‘. What a great way to connect the two albums. I really enjoyed this track. It’s soft, feels very orchestral is beautifully layered.

Next up is ‘Don’t forget our night’. According to the album introduction, LUCY is taking us to a festival during a midsummer night with this song. If that isn’t a pretty mental picture, I don’t know what is. Get your good headphones out, because this is an incrediblly beautiful song. The vocals mix so well with the instrumental and I love the double vocals. I’m going tot be obsessed with this one for a while.

‘Colorless’ “delivers resonant comfort to those who want to wake up from the scars of their soft and lonely childhood.” What a description. For the instrumentals they only used the colorless keys.

Next up

‘Opening’ brings back the bass and the energy. We’re going hopeful and cheerful in this one. The guitar really goes off and brings us back some rock.

Next up is ‘Ending’. This has quite the dramatic opening. I like this sound a lot and the mix of bass and violin is lovely.

‘We will fly away’ featuring Song Eun Hye is the last track with a feature. The musical vibe of this track is next level. I’m digging this combination so much. I desperately hope they make a music video for this.

The closing track is ‘You are my light’. This one is for the fans and the members. It’s soft and utterly lovely.

Overall ‘Childhood’ by LUCY is a fantastic album with a a cohesive sound while still allowing themselves room to experiment with their sound. It’s great!

Go ahead and listen to it here.
