This week, we’re diving into a production that many fans have eagerly anticipated. Let’s talk about ‘Love in the Big City.’
The Plot
Written by Kim Na-deul and directed by E.oni, ‘Love in the Big City’ is a comedy-drama film adaptation of Sang Young Park’s acclaimed novel of the same name.
The story follows Jae-hee (Kim Go-eun), a free-spirited and bold college student, and her best friend Heung-soo (Noh Sang-hyun), a gay man in his 20s with a tender heart and a lively personality. Together, they navigate the highs and lows of their youth while building an unbreakable friendship in a world that doesn’t always accept them for who they are.
An Unlikely Friendship
Jae-hee and Heung-soo’s bond begins in the most unexpected way—she catches him kissing one of their professors outside a club. When rumors about Heung-soo’s sexuality start circulating around campus, Jae-hee steps in to protect him, spreading a lie that they had been romantically involved to deflect attention.
Their bond is further cemented when Heung-soo returns the favor by standing by Jae-hee’s side after a false rumor spreads about her sending topless photos to a guy. Their shared outsider status in the judgmental and hierarchical world of university life creates the foundation for a lifelong friendship. Together, they decide to live their 20s on their own terms—embracing freedom, friendship, and fun in the big city.
Living Together: The Next Chapter
In a bid for safety and comfort after Jae-hee experiences a man trying to steal her underwear, the pair decides to move in together. Their co-living arrangement comes with its own set of challenges and adjustments, but it also strengthens their bond.
As roommates, Jae-hee and Heung-soo face their personal struggles and joys side by side, supporting each other as they navigate their respective careers and personal growth. Their shared moments—heartwarming, chaotic, and bittersweet—form the heart of the movie.
Differences Between the Movie and the Series
The ‘Love in the Big City’ movie takes a slightly different approach compared to the series. While the series focuses on the romantic relationships and personal growth of Heung-soo (referred to as Go Young in the series), the movie leans more into the coming-of-age and slice-of-life aspects of the story.
The film puts the spotlight on the beautiful and wholesome friendship between Jae-hee and Heung-soo, exploring how their bond helps them face adversity, grow, and navigate life in their 20s. Both adaptations, however, remain true to the spirit of the book and beautifully portray the strong connection between the two characters.
