[Review] Jeong Sewoon – 24 Part 1

Starship Entertainment soloist Jeong Sewoon is back with a new EP ‘24 Part 1’. We’re in love with his beautiful voice, so let’s dive right in.

24 Part 1

The opening track is ‘Say Yes’, which is also the title track. Jeong Sewoon co-wrote and co-composed ‘Say Yes’. The song sounds really happy and very summery, but when you take a closer look at the lyrics it feels a bit bittersweet. I love his vocals in the bridge, because there’s just the slightest hint of raspiness.

Next up is ‘Don’t Know’ which starts of with a beautiful acoustic guitar. The lyrics were written by Sewoon and Young K from DAY6. So you can imagine the talent. ‘Don’t Know’ feels very soft and sweet like a warm hug after a long day. There’s also a saxophone being played in the background at some points that kind of caught me off guard, but how lovely.

The third track is ‘Horizon’. I’m totally digging the layering with the male and female vocals. It creates a very wholesome feeling. There’s also really cool bass going off in the background.

‘Beeeee’ follows. Jeong Sewoon’s sweet voice with the drum beat is excellent. I wasn’t expecting the autotune in the pre-chorus but I kind of dig it. What a funky, happy song!

After that we get ‘O’. This song is something else entirely. It’s bluesy, and the tonal play is incredible. You expect the vocals to go somewhere but it doesn’t follow at all. It subverts expectations and definitely manages to leave an impact. The guitar solo is all kinds of amazing.

‘Hidden Star’ closes off the album. I was waiting for the ballad to show up. ‘Hidden Star’ is a gorgeous small little song that can fit in the palm of your hand. It’s just his vocals and a piano and sometimes that’s all you need. There’s an effect on the piano that makes it sound old and weary and it fits the vibe of the song so well.

Overall

‘24 Part 1’ by Jeong Sewoon is an absolutely wonderful addition to his discography. I’m constantly blown away by his talent because it’s not just the vocals. He has co-writing credits on all of the songs and on some even composing and arranging credits. He definitely had a big hand in creating this EP and it’s lovely.
