[Review] Hospital Playlist

2020 has been a great year for drama lovers. We have been spoiled with great productions and today I’m talking about one of my favourite ones so far ‘Hospital Playlist’.

Written by Lee Woo-jung and directed by Shin Won-ho ‘Hospital Playlist’ follows the story of five doctors who have been friends since they met in medical school. They work at the same hospital after being scouted by Ahn Jung-won (Yoo Yeon-seok) and are also part of a band formed by Yang Seok-hyung (Kim Dae-myung).

Along with them are Lee Ik-joon (Jo Jung-suk),  Kim Joon-wan (Jung Kyung-ho), and Chae Song-hwa (Jeon Mi-do). This production tells the story not just of these five friends but also of the medical staff in the hospital as well as the lives of some of the patients.

Organic flow

I’m a fan of Lee Woo-jung’s writing and Shin Won-ho’s direction, this power team wrote and directed the legendary ‘Reply’ series. From the first episode of this drama I felt the familiarity of the writing and filming. This power duo is incredible and they have a great way of captivating the public with heartfelt stories that reach the human side of the viewers.

I’m already a fan of medical dramas, but what made this one extra special is how the characters weren’t shown as only incredibly professionals but also as humans, with a life beyond duty.

The writer didn’t force the story at all, every single story had an organic flow, not everyone had a happy ending, and not all the patients made it. All of these factors made this story feel more real and extremely organic.

Mix of Genres and Great Acting

An interesting thing about Hospital Playlist is that even though it falls into the genre ‘Medical K-Drama’ because of the setting. There’s also plenty of light comedy and romance. This mix was very interesting to watch, and it worked perfectly thanks to the great chemistry the actors had.

I absolutely loved the friendship of these friends, they trusted each other and also the ones around them. It was refreshing, absolutely adorable and very natural thanks to the incredible cast.

The supporting actors of this drama were as incredible as the main ones. Big names such as Kim Hae-sook, Kim Kap-soo, Sung Dong-il, Moon Hee-kyung, among others were part of the cast, and this production even had an special cameo of the well known actress Go Ara.

Real Life Stories

The subplots of ‘Hospital Playlist’ were incredibly well written, the doctors dealt with stories that could be anyone’s. It was a great drama that had me in tears, laughing or even jamming at the music they played.

If you are looking for a heartfelt story, with a funny twist, make sure to watch ‘Hospital Playlist’. It will have you 100% committed to the stories and life of the characters. Check out the trailer below and you can watch this drama on Netflix.
