[Review] Giriboy – 9Cut

Giriboy just released his latest EP ‘9Cut’. And we’ve been hella excited for this one! Let’s dive right in!

9Cut

We start with the title track ‘It was love’. First off, the song is absolutely stunning. I love the arrangement and Giriboy’s backing vocals. The video however is out of this world. Everything from the shots and the placement is so well planned out.

In the beginning you can see one of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings, ‘Irises’. It was painted just before he left the asylum in 1890, the same year of his death. I’m sure that there’s some meaning in there. The same goes for the arrows. It reminds me a lot of this performance artist Marina Abramovic and Ullay called ‘Rest Energy’. If you want to read more about Art used in Korean music videos, you can read our feature about that here.

After that we get the track ‘A Guy Who Can’t Do Anything Without Alcohol’ featuring THAMA. This track embraces hip-hop a bit more than ‘It was love’. The strings are absolutely fabulous! THAMA as always delivers, I have yet to be disappointed by him. What an amazing collab.

‘Waste Paper’ follows that with an electric guitar intro that had me in my feels from the start. The amount of angst in this song is unparalleled. I dig it.

The next collab is with Zion.T and is called ‘My Place’. This feels a lot like Zion.T to be honest. They were a team on Show Me The Money 9. I am in love with this. The instrumentation halfway through gets turned up a notch and it is beautiful!

The last track on the online version is ‘Interlude’ which was composed and arranged by GLEAM. It’s a really pretty instrumental track just under two minutes.

Like A Film

Now, there are like four extra songs on the physical version which I don’t have. However, they were released on the EP ‘Like A Film : 4 songs’ that was released in October.

There’s ‘Smile, wait for the flash’ which is very much influenced by bossa nova with its Latin guitar sound.

‘Acting’ featuring Heize follows that. It has a beautiful melody with a lovely instrumentation. Heize’s verse is brilliant.

‘LASIK’ feels very lovely and a little sad. I like the effect they used for the guitar. It makes it feel very fresh.

The last track on the physical release is ‘Let’s not love each other’.
